Peralta News – Laney College and East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) to offer Plumber Training
26 October 2011. 0 comments
Laney College is again partnering with the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) in offering a nine-week course of study to prepare students for plumbing careers in the water distribution industry. The program is designed to orient students to basic plumber work, tools and equipment, and traffic safety. A lab class is included so that students will have first-hand knowledge of tools and materials used in the industry. The goal is to provide foundational skills that enable graduates to be more competitive when applying for plumbing jobs.
Water distribution industry plumbers typically work as crew members performing physically demanding outdoor work and assisting in the installation, repair and maintenance of underground pipelines, valves, meters, hydrants and other related facilities. For more information, visit Laney’s Website.

Helping Community College Students Statewide, Peralta Colleges Provided Language For New Bills Signed by Governor Jerry Brown
25 October 2011. 0 comments
In signing a number of bills into law this month, California Governor Jerry Brown signed two bills that will improve the lives of community college students across the state. One bill helps to ensure the health of students by enforcing non-smoking policies, and the other allows undocumented students to serve on district boards within the 112-community college system. Both bills contained language that the Peralta Community College District in Oakland helped draft.
Signed on October 10, Assembly Bill 795 authored by Marty Block (D-San Diego), contains amendments drafted by Peralta Community College District that would provide an important tool for community college districts seeking to enforce non-smoking policies on their campuses.
“Peralta Community College District has long had smoking policies at our colleges, but would have found those policies difficult to enforce,” said Chancellor Wise Allen. “The passage of AB 795 would better ensure that the four Peralta Community Colleges remain a healthy place for students to learn.”

The Peralta Community College District is pleased to announce that Stephanie Casenza, Executive Director of The Peralta Colleges Foundation, has been selected to receive the San Diego Press Club’s 2011 Andy Mace Award for Outstanding Contributions in Public Relations during its annual Excellence in Journalism Celebration on October 25, 2011. Casenza spent much of her career in the San Diego region before joining the Peralta Colleges Foundation in June 2010.
The Andy Mace Award is one of three special awards presented in recognition of excellence by the San Diego Press Club. This award is given to the individual public relations practitioner who, over the course of their career, has exemplified fairness and integrity, as well as effectively disseminating the truth to concerned publics. Past recipients who have received the award comprise the committee that selects each year’s winner.
“It is such an honor to have your peers nominate you for this prestigious award,” says Stephanie, “and it’s a pleasant surprise, too.”
“Ms. Casenza was appointed to the position of Executive Director for The Peralta Colleges Foundation a little over a year ago,” says PCF Board of Directors President Karen Friedman. “We’re happy to have her on board and congratulate her on being selected for this honor.”
Casenza has worked in the non-profit field for 25 years. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from San Diego State University and a master’s in business from the University of San Diego. She is among the two percent of public relations professionals who have earned the universal accreditation from the Public Relations Society of America.
Since 1964, the Peralta Community College District – Berkeley City College, College of Alameda and Laney and Merritt Colleges – has served Alameda, Albany, Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland and Piedmont by providing East Bay students of all ages with a range of educational programs and life-long learning opportunities.
