The April 24 meeting of the Peralta Board of Trustees began with the news that the Chancellor search process has not been finalized. Board President Cy Gulassa announced a very positive follow-up visit from the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges. And Board Policy consultant Jim Grivich proposed a number of policy updates developed through the shared governance process.

On Monday, April 23 2012 distinguished educator and researcher Dr. Sonia Nieto will be speaking at Laney College on the topic of Becoming Culturally Competent Educators. In this talk, Dr. Nieto will explore what it takes to become culturally competent educators. Based on her many years of working with teachers and other educators, and on new research with teachers, she will describe some of the most significant attributes of educators who are successful in teaching students of diverse backgrounds.
This is part of the Mills College’s Center for Urban Schools and Partnerships’ yearlong-series entitled Preparing Educators and Youth in a Racist World. Laney College is a co-sponsor of this event with Mills College School of Education.

Peralta News – Asian and Asian American Studies Community Action Faire at Laney College

On April 11th on the 3rd floor inside the Laney Student Center the Asian/Asian American Studies Dept held a community action faire in order to showcase student knowledge and pride for the Asian Cultural Diaspora.
There was music, food, trivia games and informative displays which promoted Asian Culture and it’s many representative nationalities and ethnic groups. Many student presenters were enrolled in Asia Film Study courses. The event also had social ramifications, opening discussions about Asian stereotyping within the Asian community and abroad and also the intersection of queer sexuality and traditional Asian family values.

Peralta News – 10th Oakland International Film Festival featured Peralta TV’s own documentary Merritt College: Home of the Black Panthers

The 10th Oakland International Film Festival was full of promise this year and Peralta News was in the building for the festivities. Hosted by the Oakland Film Society, this annual event has been growing under the direction of David Roach. Over 60 films were screened and the Oakland Museum of California had one of it’s busiest weekends this spring. Peralta TV’s own documentary ‘Merritt College: Home of the Black Panthers’ was one of the featured documentaries shown with a host of talented and cinematic films, music videos, narrative features and sci-fi.
