            Peralta Colleges Chancellor, Dr. José M. Ortiz, Announces Interim President of Merritt College

            The Chancellor of Peralta Community College District, Dr. José M. Ortiz, announced today the selection of Dr. Patricia Stanley, who has served as the First Deputy Assistant Secretary for Community Colleges at the U.S. Department of Education, 2006-09, as the interim President of Merritt College.

            Dr. Stanley, former President of Frederick Community College in Maryland, has held a number of positions in California, including Administrator for Workforce Development in the State Chancellor’s Office, Administrative Dean at Orange Coast College, Executive Vice President at Cypress College and Executive Director of the California Institute for Career Development.

            Dr. Stanley holds a bachelor’s degree from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, a master’s degree from the University of Southern Mississippi, and an Ed.D. from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California.

            She is active in numerous community and educational organizations at both the state and national level. Dr. Stanley has also participated in international education programs in Kuwait, Thailand, the former Soviet Union, China and a number of countries in Europe and Scandinavia.

            Dr. Stanley’s recent professional activities include her work as a co-editor and chapter author for the 2011 publication Fulfilling the Promise of the Community College: Increasing First-Year Student Engagement and Success, a monograph published by the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition and co-sponsored by the American Association of Community Colleges.

            Her exact start date has not yet been determined, but Dr. Stanley is expected to begin her post as interim President at Merritt College in September 2012. She will remain interim President until a permanent President for the college is selected.

            Merritt College, located in Oakland, California, is one of the four Peralta Colleges, which also include Berkeley City College, College of Alameda and Laney College, also in Oakland. The District, which includes the cities of Alameda, Albany, Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland and Piedmont, provides classes for more than 28,000 students each semester.

                Up to date referenced science articles are at every students fingertips. Go to the Laney Library and pick up a password list so that you can access all the databases from any offsite computer.

                      Dr. Michael Orkin Tapped as the District’s Interim Vice Chancellor for Educational Services

                      The Chancellor of the Peralta Community College District, Dr. José M. Ortiz, has announced the appointment of Dr. Michael Orkin as the District’s Interim Vice Chancellor for Educational Services. Dr. Orkin, pictured, will manage educational services for the Peralta Colleges, which includes Berkeley City College, College of Alameda and Laney and Merritt Colleges in Oakland.

                      Dr. Orkin has more than 25 years experience as a college and university administrator. He has served, most recently, as the Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs at the Peralta Colleges and as Dean of Business, Mathematics and Sciences at Laney College.

                      Before joining the Peralta Colleges, Dr. Orkin was Associate Dean of Science at California State University, East Bay. Also at CSU East Bay, Dr. Orkin was Professor of Statistics and Chair of the Statistics Department where he is currently Professor of Statistics, Emeritus.

                      Dr. Orkin has had considerable consulting experience for government and the private sector and spent two years as a managing scientist at Exponent, Inc., a Silicon Valley scientific consulting company. Dr. Orkin is an expert in statistics, data analysis and educational technology. He has published numerous research papers and has written data mining software that was featured in Wired Magazine.

                      Dr. Orkin has appeared in national and Bay Area media, including CNN, NBC’s Dateline, KTVU News, KPIX News, the LA Times, and ABC’s World News Tonight. He was an invited speaker in the Google Tech Talk lecture series. Dr. Orkin is the author of several books, including What are the Odds? Chance in Everyday Life.

                      Dr. Orkin has a Ph.D. in Statistics and a B.A. in Mathematics, both from the University of California, Berkeley

                        Lilia Celhay Named Division Dean at Berkeley City College

                        Berkeley, CA, July 31—Lilia Celhay has been named division dean at Berkeley City College, Dr. Deborah Budd announced. She will be responsible for several college departments, including American Sign Language, distance education, modern languages, business, computer information systems, mathematics, multimedia arts, public and human services, the college library, and special projects.

                        “As someone who is passionate about languages, is deeply interested in the sciences, and is always learning about technology and its many tools, I am excited to have an opportunity to work with faculty in these areas,” Celhay said. “BCC faculty are known for their innovative approaches and are committed to developing a culture that promotes student success.”

                        Celhay, who began her career with the Peralta Colleges in 2004, served at College of Alameda (CoA) first as an outreach coordinator, then as an adjunct instructor for CoA’s English as a Second Language and Digital Bridge Academy. She also was a project manager for that college’s One-Stop Career Center.

                        In 2008, she transferred to Laney College as the founding director of its Gateway to College Program. Celhay later was named interim dean of community partnerships and workforce development and served in that position from 2009 to 2011. She became founding director of Laney’s APASS Program in 2011, then was appointed interim dean of academic and student affairs there in 2012. Prior to entering the field of higher education, Celhay was online marketing manager for Geoworks.

                        A graduate of California State University, East Bay, Celhay earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communications and a master’s degree in educational technology there. She is currently working on her doctorate in education.
