11 March 2014

Laney_Announcement

Team Peralta at Laney College will host the first of what we hope will be an annual BOYS & MEN OF COLOR (BMOC) RESOURCE FAIR.  We welcome Berkeley City College, College of Alameda and Merritt College to join the team at Laney as we highlight some of the signature educational programs our boys and men need to ensure that they are best prepared to succeed and lead!  Specifically, we ask that you identify CTE, transfer or other programs you wish to highlight so that we can set aside tables where your faculty and/or staff leads can share information with members of our community.  The BMOC RESOURCE FAIR will be held in the Laney College Student Center on March 26-29th, 4-7pm.

At Laney, we hope to have a host of Career and Technical programs in addition to our STEMS, Language Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Fine and Performing Arts, as well as Athletic programs available to reveal what we do that makes the educational programs at Laney unique, relevant and exciting.  Key staff of many essential student support services will be on hand as well.

We’re so excited about this event, and need to firm up the departments & programs that will be available to present during the RESOURCE FAIR.  In addition, we have reserved up to 100 seats for students to attend the Wednesday evening session. Ideally, we will confirm details by no later than next Tuesday, March 18, 2014.

As the lead organizer, Paul Flores has already shared, “There is Huge interest in this event and I am so excited at the opportunity to be the first county based multi-agency BMOC RESOURCE FAIR that is directly connected to career pathways, Covered California enrollment and health screening and arts and culture presentation. This is a unique and powerful vision.”

I agree wholeheartedly, as this BMOC RESOURCE FAIR will be followed by Mr. Flores’ powerful play, PLACAS, developed with and directed by Michael John Garcés.  For more initial details, check out http://www.laney.edu and www.sfiaf.org/placas_2014.  It stars Richardo Salinas of Culture Clash. We expect this special production to be a powerful part of this 4-day series of events to honor our boys and men of color coming from throughout the City of Oakland and neighboring communities.

Many community organizations are on board for this wonderful collaboration of community efforts. Please join in on making this important event all it can be!

Please contact my assistant, Ms. Brandi Howard at bhoward@peralta.edu, to confirm your participation, and the number tables you may need.
