The April 24 meeting of the Peralta Board of Trustees began with the news that the Chancellor search process has not been finalized. Board President Cy Gulassa announced a very positive follow-up visit from the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges. And Board Policy consultant Jim Grivich proposed a number of policy updates developed through the shared governance process.

The March 27 meeting started with an update from the Stop the Swap Coalition, followed by a large group of students from Laney College voicing concerns about the financial aid system. Next up, a positive budget update from Vice Chancellor of Finance Ron Gerhard. And the District received a $6000 rebate from PG&E for our efforts to reduce energy use during peak demand. Twenty four faculty members received tenure, making them permanent members of the Peralta family. And PFT president Matt Goldstein informed the Board of successful contract negotiations.

The Peralta Colleges Board of Trustees held their annual organizational meeting on December 6, and congratulations to Cy Gulassa for his election to Board President for the coming year. Many students, faculty and staff voiced their support for renegotiating a debt swap with Morgan Stanley that could save the District over $1,000,000 per year. And the Board received a report from our State lobbyist, highlighting some of the actions in Sacramento that have an effect on our students.

Welcome to another edition of Board Spotlight. The November 15 meeting started off with another strong showing by Save Our Schools. The Board received an extensive report on the development of an IT Master Plan by consultant Tony Tortorice. And Trustees Nicky González Yuen and Abel Guillén put forth a request for the Chancellor to investigate putting the Peralta Community College District moneys into community banks. With the end of the summer semester, The Board of Trustees held their final meeting before the recess. They received a report from Stephanie Casenza of the Peralta Colleges Foundation. The Board honored outgoing Peralta Federation of Teachers president Debra Weintraub for years of work. And they debated the structuring of the Retirement Board.
