P-SPAN – Laney College Sustainability Symposium

The Peralta Community College District (Peralta District), the Institute for Sustainable Policy Studies (ISPS) and Sustainable Pacific Rim Cities (SPRC) along with Bay Area leaders in pre-disaster planning presented a special 2014 Resilient City and Sustainability Symposia commemorating the on-going efforts and partnerships around Sustainability and Resiliency work in the Bay Area. This one-day symposium highlighted representatives from these Bay Area Cities, local university/college researchers as well as industry leaders and professionals from the Bay Area involved in cutting edge sustainability work from community analytics to eco-water treatment systems. This event took place at Laney College, on April 25, 2014.

P-SPAN – Earth Week with 350 Bay Area at Berkeley City College

Berkeley City College continued Earth Week with “Dirty Energy/Clean Solutions”, a talk by Judy Pope, who serves on the Steering Committee of 350 Bay Area as Strategy Coordinator and as speaker and speaker trainer for 350 Bay Area’s speakers bureau. 350.org has been one of the most important groups raising the issue of Global Warming and organizing against the Keystone XL Pipeline.  This event took place on April 23, 2014.

P-SPAN – “Music, Computing and People” lecture by Dr. Ge Wang at Berkeley City College

The Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) and Berkeley City College (BCC) continued their “Not on the Test: The Pleasures and Uses of Mathematics” lecture series with “Music, Computing and People” a lecture by Dr. Ge Wang.  Dr. Wang, assistant professor at Stanford University’s Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA), researches programming languages and interactive software systems for computer music, mobile and social music, laptop orchestras, and education at the intersection of computer science and music.  He is the author of the ChucK audio programming language, is founding director of Stanford Laptop Orchestra (SLOrk) and of the Stanford Mobile Phone Orchestra (MoPhO).  He also co-founded Smule, and is the designer of the iPhone’s Ocarina and Magic Piano.  This event took place at Berkeley City College on February 12, 2014.

Laney College’s Music Department presented a Jazz Concert at the Laney College Theater, on December 10, 2013.  The program included performances by the smaller Jazz Combo, and the larger Jazz Orchestra, led by Music Instructor Charles Gurke.

P-SPAN – Dr. Keith Devlin at Berkeley City College

On October 9, 2013, Dr. Keith Devlin, Stanford Mathematician, gave a lecture at Berkeley City College on “Video Games for Mathematics.” Devlin is a mathematician at Stanford University, a co-founder and executive director of the university’s H-STAR institute, a co-founder of the Stanford Media X research network, a senior researcher at CSLI, and co-founder and president of InnerTube Games. The “Not on the Test: The Pleasures and Uses of Mathematics” series of lectures is sponsored by the Simons Foundation (www.simonsfoundation.org) and co-presented by the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute and Berkeley City College.

P-SPAN – Merritt College: ‘Free Huey! The Trial of the Century’

Judge Lise Pearlman spoke to Merritt College on October 30, 2013.  Judge Pearlman wrote a book and is working on a film about Huey Newton and his 1968 trial for murder.  Also at this event: special guest speaker Professor Emeritus Melvin Newton, former black panther and brother of Huey Newton.

P-SPAN – Berkeley City College: A Talk by Malalai Joya

At Berkeley City College, on October 17, 2013, Malalai Joya gave a talk: “A Woman Among Warlords: The Extraordinary Story of an Afghan Who Dared to Raise Her Voice”. Joya first gained international attention in 2003 when she spoke out publicly against the domination of warlords in Afghanistan. In 2005 she became one of 68 women elected tothe 249-‐seat National Assembly. An extraordinary young woman became a teacher in secret girls’ schools, hiding her books under her burqa under Taliban Rule.  She helped establish a free medical clinic and orphanage in Farah. In 2010, Time Magazine placed Malalai Joya on their annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.  The tour is organized and sponsored by United Anti-War Coalition (UNAC) and The Afghan Women’s Mission.

P-SPAN – Daniel Ellsberg at Berkeley City College

Part 2

The Berkeley City College Global Studies Program presented a talk by Daniel Ellsberg: “Manning, Snowden, Syria and the U.S. Constitution,” on September 24, 2013. By publishing The Pentagon Papers in 1971, Ellsberg revealed the lies the U.S. government had told to justify the war against Vietnam. Ellsberg’s revelations played an important part in helping to end that war.
