Chancellor José M. Ortiz Announces Peralta Colleges Removed From Warning

8 July 2013

Dr-Jose-M-OrtizThe Chancellor of the Peralta Community College District, Dr. José M. Ortiz, has announced that Berkeley City College, College of Alameda and Laney and Merritt Colleges in Oakland have been removed from “warning” status by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (“ACCJC”), in an action made public July 3, 2013.

Chancellor Ortiz is pleased to note that the announced actions by ACCJC included Berkeley City College and Laney College being removed from warning

-– the lowest level status -– and College of Alameda and Merritt College also being removed from warning and having their accreditation reaffirmed. Berkeley City College and Laney both previously had their accreditation reaffirmed in 2009. With this decision, the Chancellor pointed out, all the Peralta Colleges are now fully accredited.

“I am pleased with this good news that the Peralta Colleges are fully accredited,” Chancellor Ortiz said. “We stand ready to serve students as fully accredited institutions, with student support services and newly added classes for the fall semester,” the Chancellor added.

“Faculty and staff worked hard to address ACCJC’s recommendations,” said Chancellor Ortiz. “I want to recognize their efforts, and say we look forward to enrolling new and continuing students this fall.”

As part of its “warning” to the Peralta Colleges, ACCJC, which accredits colleges in California, Hawaii and the Pacific islands, made a number of recommendations to the Peralta Community College District that required administrative attention, although the status of colleges’ academic programs were never in question.

“This is good news for all of us at the Peralta Colleges,” remarked Board of Trustees President Cy Gulassa. “Our Chancellor, the presidents, faculty and staff all did a remarkable job working with the ACCJC to address its concerns.”

“That the Peralta Colleges are fully accredited is news the entire community should be proud of, and we look forward to serving our community’s students this fall,” President Gulassa added.
