Laney Student Jiayan Lu Awarded the John & Deborah Tunis Scholarship

5 June 2014

Jiayan Lu

This $500 scholarship is available to support female and/or minority students who demonstrate financial need, outstanding academic achievement, and an interest in pursuing their career and degree in one of three categories: math/science including the health sciences, business/industry, or vocational education. Additional criteria include the applicant’s volunteer and community service activities and achievements.

Jiayan is an immigrant from China and she is the first in her family to attend college.  She a Business major and has already been accepted to UC Davis, CSU East Bay and San Jose State University, and more.  Jiayan works as a Peer Advisory for EOPS, assisting students who are challenged by language, socioeconomic, and educational disadvantages.

Jiayan’s accomplishments stem from hard lessons she had to learn that resulted from several unfortunate circumstances in her personal life.  She is a full time student while working part time.  After her father’s accident, her life turned upside down.  Her mother had to quit her job to take care of him. Jiayan, had to work because she is now the only breadwinner in her family. Instead of feeling defeated, she believes that her struggles can also be the source of her strength, motivating her to become more mature, patient, confident and strong

Jiayan’s dream is to work at a non-profit organization and contribute to communities by exploring and solving economic problems.  She said that college is the first step toward fulfilling her lifelong dream.  In addition to school and work, she volunteers at the Korean United Methodist Church, organizing and distributing food to low income people in Oakland.  She understands the needs of the people she works with because she can identify with them. This is why she is eager to help.
