Merritt College Center for Science and Allied Health Building Groundbreaking Ceremony

11 October 2013

PCCD_AnnouncementThe Peralta Community College District is hosting a special groundbreaking ceremony for the new Center for Science and Allied Health Building at Merritt College in Oakland on Friday, Oct. 18, 2013,from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

The ceremony, which is free and open to the public, will be held in front of the Merritt College Library, 2500 Campus Drive, in Oakland. A brief program will take place in the Huey Newton and Bobby Seale Student Lounge prior to the ceremony and refreshments will be served in the lounge following the ceremony.

The groundbreaking will kick off the building of one of the most advanced science centers at a community college in California. Its construction, one of the largest Measure A bond projects in the four-college district, is being undertaken after careful consultation with students, faculty and staff and the community. The building will include cutting edge technology and the latest in sustainable, or green, building advances.

“I am pleased that we are moving forward on this state-of-the-art science building at Merritt College,” said Peralta District Chancellor, Dr. José M. Ortiz.

“This kind of building is what we need to provide twenty-first century teaching and learning to our students,” the Chancellor added. “This center will complement Merritt’s exemplary programs in science and healthcare.”

“I want to again thank our community for making this building possible by supporting our bond measures over the years,” Chancellor Ortiz said. “We couldn’t have done it without community support for our educational mission.”

The 107,292-square foot building will house Merritt College’s sciences, genomics, nursing and nutrition departments. With construction beginning shortly, it is expected that the building will be completed in May, 2015.
