Cassandra BeverlyUSA TODAY named 20 students to its 21st annual All-USA Community College Academic Team in New Orleans, honoring them for outstanding intellectual achievement and leadership, and Merritt College student Cassandra Beverly is among this list.

“I was nominated by Barbara Dimopoulos, Phi Theta Kappa advisor for the Beta Theta Lambda chapter at Merritt College.” She explains, “I can’t really answer as to why she nominated me, but I believe that she saw my drive, my leadership skills, and high academic marks”.  Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) is the international honor society for the 2-year colleges. To be a member of PTK, students must have at least a 3.25 G.P.A.

The All-USA Community College Academic Team presented by USA TODAY, the American Association of Community Colleges, and Phi Theta Kappa and sponsored by Follett Higher Education Group honors outstanding two-year college students.  The team of 20 was selected by a panel of judges from more than 1,600 students nominated by 800 community colleges.  Judges considered grades, leadership, activities and, most importantly, how students extend their intellectual talents beyond the classroom.

Raised in East Oakland, Beverly graduated from Castlemont High School. “I chose to attend Merritt College because I wanted to attend a school that was affordable and supported women like myself, a single mother, full-time worker, and first generation college student.” She recalls “I found all of that and more at the Peralta Colleges.”

This year, 27 California community college students were selected for the All-California Academic First Team, 28 students for the Second Team and 28 students for the Third Team. These students represent 42 California community colleges.

The Community College League of California sponsored an award ceremony at which all team members received medallions of honor and a certificate recognizing their accomplishments. Three other Peralta Community College District students made the All-California Team: Dulguun Bayaraa – Berkeley City College, Jurena Storm from College of Alameda and Harold Woodard from Merritt College, along with Beverly were honored at the League’s March event in Sacramento.

“As the first student from Peralta to receive this award, I feel humbled and honored that I have been allowed to be the vessel of hope and possibility for the Peralta Colleges.” Beverly proclaimed, “No longer can anyone say that Peralta students can’t be the best of the best!”
