Peralta’s Public Information Department Wins NCMPR Gold, Silver Awards

6 October 2014

PCCD_AnnouncementThe Peralta Community College District is pleased to announce that its Public Information Department has recently been awarded two gold Medallion Awards by the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR), District 6, which includes community colleges in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Utah, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of Palau, Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Territory of Guam.

The first gold Medallion was for best Original Photograph for a picture of a Laney College student by department staffer Faiza Ali. The runners up were Western Nevada College and San Diego Mesa.

The second gold Medallion Award was for best Online Advertising for the new enrollment look on Peralta’s Website and its social media efforts to build enrollment, specifically Facebook and Twitter messaging to students. There was no silver award; Mt. San Antonio received a Bronze for their online efforts.

Last fall, Peralta TV, also part of the Public Information Department, won a national NCMPR Silver Paragon Award for its monthly public affairs program, “Peralta Matters,” hosted by the department’s Jay Calhoun. The winning episode was the two-part series “The Summer of Science,” which profiled several Peralta students as well as many of the exceptional science programs offered by the Peralta Colleges. Peralta is particularly proud of the Online Gold Medallion as it demonstrates that the District is a leader among community colleges in its social media outreach efforts. Public Information staff have worked hard to build up Peralta’s social media and outreach efforts over the past several years and it appears to be an effective way to reach students and the community.

Recent survey data shows that the Public Information Department’s outreach efforts “extremely” or “moderately” influenced the decision of 21.4% of Peralta’s students to enroll at Berkeley City College, College of Alameda or Oakland’s Laney and Merritt Colleges.
