During a special event that took place on Wednesday, June 20, 2012, at the Gondola Room at Lake Chalet, a local non-profit organization, Oakland Rising, named Peralta Colleges Board of Trustees member Abel Guillén its “Elected Official of the Year”.

The event is known as The Young Progressive’s Party & Townie Awards, and is a celebration of Oakland’s social justice legacy. “Each year we honor activists and leaders from our social justice and political communities, said Kopali Serna, Director of Community Partnerships for Oakland Rising. “This year we presented 5 awards for Volunteer of the Year, Elected Official of the Year, Racial Justice Leadership, Economic Justice Leadership, and a Townie of the Year Award. We are honored that Trustee Abel Guillén participated in our event and were able to honor him for his leadership at the Peralta Community College District,” added Serna.

“I am honored and thrilled to have received this recognition from Oakland Rising,” said Guillén. “Much like the communities we serve at the Peralta Colleges, Oakland Rising is engaging citizens and transforming our neighborhoods. Together, in partnership, we have the power to be game changers and to bring positive change to our communities, particularly in East and West Oakland” noted Guillén.

Oakland Rising educates and mobilizes voters in the East and West Oakland communities to speak up for and take charge of the issues impacting their lives. The organization is a multilingual, multiracial collaborative with deep roots in these Oakland neighborhoods, proving that everyday residents working together have the power to change the way the city is run. With longtime Oakland families, as well as new neighbors working shoulder-to-shoulder, Oakland Rising is building on Oakland’s incredibly rich history to advance smart, community-first solutions for a thriving town.
