Peralta Community College District to Award IIE Generation Study Abroad Scholarships to Diversify Students who Study Abroad

The Peralta Community College District’s (PCCD) Office of International Education was selected to receive $7,500 to support new study abroad scholarships as part of its commitment to the Institute of International Education’s (IIE) Generation Study Abroad initiative to increase the number and diversity of students who study abroad by the end of the decade. Laney College’s Department of Dance will match this funding, to make a total of six student scholarship awards of $2,500 each. These scholarships will be used by students toward the cost of tuition, books, and travel related to Dance Study Abroad between Fall 2016 and Summer 2017.

PCCD will use the IIE Generation Study Abroad Scholarships to help students who otherwise would not be able to participate in a study abroad program. The Department of Dance at Laney College has done a fantastic job of raising funds and is actively working to assist students who wouldn’t typically go abroad be able to do so. The Department of Dance will be nominating the students to participate in one of their programs from Fall 2016-Summer 2017. Eligible students must be from low-income families (Financial Aid eligible) and have never studied abroad before.

PCCD is one of 14 colleges and universities selected based on its notable progress toward meeting its Generation Study Abroad commitment. IIE Generation Study Abroad grants are made possible through IIE’s Study Abroad Fund, with the support of IIE, STA Travel and individual donors, to award scholarships for study in any destination that the college approves. IIE will award a total of approximately $200,000 in scholarships for campuses to provide as scholarships to their students. This is IIE’s second round of grants to support campuses’ efforts to provide scholarships to expand study abroad participation among American college students.

Less than 10 percent of American college students study abroad and few of those students come from underrepresented groups. PCCD’s Office of International Education joined the Institute of International Education’s Generation Study Abroad initiative to take action to make it possible for more U.S. students from a broad range of backgrounds to participate in an academic, internship, or service-learning experience abroad.

“All college students need international educational and work experience in order to compete and thrive in a global workforce,” said Allan E. Goodman, IIE’s President and CEO. “But students need financial resources to go abroad. That’s why IIE is dedicated to supporting its Generation Study Abroad commitment partners’ goals to provide more students with international education opportunities.”

This year’s IIE Generation Study Abroad Scholarship grants will go to Appalachian State University; Case Western Reserve University; Central Piedmont Community College; Elmhurst College; Hawaii Pacific University; Johnson & Wales University; Lamar University; Missouri University of Science and Tech; Peralta Community College District; Rochester Institute of Technology; Salve Regina University; University of South Carolina, Upstate; Utah State University; and Washington and Jefferson College.

Some of the actions that winning campuses are taking include: providing funding for first-generation college students to study abroad, developing student ambassador programs to promote study abroad on campus, increasing freshman study abroad programs, and creating targeted advising programs specifically for veterans, minority students, and STEM students.

Launched in March 2014, the Generation Study Abroad network continues to gain momentum and now has over 600 partners from the U.S. and abroad. As part of their commitments, Generation Study Abroad partner campuses have pledged to raise money and give scholarships, and a number of study abroad program providers and host campuses outside of the United States have pledged to award scholarships toward the cost of their programs.

Lead Your Campus to the Top: Best Practices in Internationalizing the Campus

On Thursday, March 10, 2016 Drew Gephart presented at the Institute of International Education (IIE)’s 2016 Best Practices Conference entitled “Lead Your Campus to the Top: Best Practices in Internationalizing the Campus”. The conference was held at UC Davis and focused on themes such as internationalization strategies, expanding participation in #StudyAbroad, and building international partnerships. Founded in 1919, the IIE is a private not-for-profit leader in the international exchange of people and ideas. In collaboration with governments, foundations and other sponsors, IIE creates programs of study and training for students, educators and professionals from all sectors.

These programs include the flagship Fulbright Program and Gilman Scholarships administered for the U.S. Department of State. IIE also conducts policy research, provides resources on international exchange opportunities and offers support to scholars in danger.

The workshop was called “Models and Best Practices in Internationalization at the Community College”, and explored various tools for internationalization at the community college, ideal for community college representatives who are looking for practical ideas on how to internationalize their campus.

Drew shared the two successful proposals he wrote for the California Colleges for International Education (CCIE) grants to support the internationalization of the Peralta Colleges and strengthening of the study abroad programs. These grants have helped jumpstart international student programs and activities, such as organizing an annual study abroad fair, creating a mentorship program for new international students (CONNECT), and establishing international student clubs on each campus.

The Institute of International Education (IIE), in partnership with Go Overseas and other study abroad organizations (AIFS Study Abroad, CET Academic Programs, IFSA-Butler, STA Travel), launched the #GoStudyAbroad contest calling on everyone to encourage U.S. college students to study abroad by the time they graduate. Students who enter the contest can win a $10K study abroad scholarship (along with other prizes). IIE will also be awarding five $500 travel prizes and one $1,500 grand prize to Study Abroad Alumni for a round trip flight back to the study abroad country to the person who nominates the most friends to study abroad.

Peralta Recognized for Commitment to Study Abroad

IMG_0461The Office of International Education for the Peralta Community College District (PCCD) was recognized in the Institute of International Education’s (IIE) “Generation Study Abroad Year One Impact” report for its commitment to increase awareness and advocacy of study abroad. IIE also conducts policy research, provides resources on international exchange opportunities and offers support to scholars in danger..

This past summer, 2015, PCCD offered four study abroad programs to Europe, Haiti, Ghana and Jamaica. In 2016, PCCD is offering courses in Cuba, Iceland and Ghana.

As part of the effort to expand awareness of study abroad, the Office of International Education hosted its second annual study abroad fair at Berkeley City College on September 23, 2015. The fair included a special presentation on Cuban Animation by popular Cuban animators, Mario and Daniel Rivas, that was facilitated by Paul Bardwil of Global Education Foundation, the organization assisting the Spanish Study Abroad in Cuba Program at Berkeley City College, which is scheduled to run in May 28 to June 4, 2016. Facilitated by Drew Gephart of the PCCD Office of International Education, the event was well attended by students from all levels, including international students who are also eligible to join in the study abroad program of their choice. Several vendors, including those from the Peralta Colleges, as well as the Office of International Education, were present to showcase and to answer questions about their study abroad programs.

“As a local travel company based here in Berkeley, Go Overseas was proud to participate in the Peralta Study Abroad fair. We’re committed to making international education accessible for all students and this event was an excellent opportunity to promote awareness and drum up enthusiasm for community college students here in the Bay Area,” said Anna Morris, Study & Intern Abroad Director, Go Overseas.

The Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange, released today by the Institute of International Education (IIE), shows that five percent more American students – a total of 304,467 – studied abroad for academic credit from their U.S. colleges and universities in 2013/14, as compared with the prior year. This is the highest rate of growth in study abroad in five years, and reflects building momentum after the two percent growth reported last year. While study abroad by American students has more than tripled in the last two decades, still only about 10 percent of U.S. students study abroad before graduating from college.

The Peralta Community College District has focused on increasing study abroad participation this year, as a commitment partner in the IIE Generation Study Abroad initiative to double the number of American students who go abroad each year —

600,000 individuals — by 2020, and to diversify that group. Currently, fewer than 10-percent of American college students participate in international study programs, and less than 25 percent of those students are from underrepresented minority groups. At PCCD, there is an emphasis on the importance of global awareness, and a belief that a study abroad experience enhances a student’s global outlook and overall education.

“There is a great need to grow the study abroad program at The Peralta Colleges. Due to the necessity for international exposure in the global economy, we are working hard so that Peralta students are better situated to be successful in their careers and in lives,” said Drew Gephart, International Services Manager of the Peralta Community College District..

“International experience is one of the most important components of a 21st century education,” said IIE’s President Dr. Allan E. Goodman. “Studying abroad is one of the best ways undergraduate and graduate students gain the international experience necessary to succeed in today’s global workforce. And studying in another country prepares students to be real contributors to solving key global issues in the world we share.”

Launched in March 2014 with 156 partners, Generation Study Abroad has grown to include more than 600 partners that have pledged a total of $185 million in support to make study abroad more accessible to all students. Partners include 350 U.S. colleges and universities, 100 from outside of the United States, study abroad organizations and education associations, as well as 14 country partners around the world – including the U.S. Department of State. In addition, 500 K-12 teachers from 50 states have pledged to take action to encourage their students to develop a global perspective and consider studying abroad when they are in college.

Peralta’s International Education Office Joins Institute of International Education’s Generation Study Abroad Initiative

The Peralta Community College District’s Office of International Education has joined the Institute of International Education’s Generation Study Abroad Initiative to double the number of American students who study abroad by the end of the decade. The initiative is also focused on increasing the diversity of students who study abroad, ensuring quality and removing barriers to participation.

In the last two years, the Peralta Colleges has had 56 students study abroad. This year two programs are being offered through the Laney College Dance Department for Summer 2014: Cuban Culture and History through Dance Study Abroad (Havana, Cuba – July 11-18, 2014) and Travel to Haiti (Haiti – July 26-August 17, 2014). A total of 308 partners have joined Generation Study Abroad to date. They include 241 United States colleges and universities and other associations and organizations, including the U.S. Department of State and the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

“I believe all students should have the opportunity and access to study abroad,” says Drew Gephart from Peralta’s Office of International Education. “I am excited to join the Generation Study Abroad initiative, and committed to making a difference in the lives of our students through our study abroad program,” added Gephart, pictured with Wagaye Johannes, Project Director at the Institute of International Education, accepting a Certificate of Appreciation to the Peralta Colleges.

Peralta’s Office of International Education is committed to finding new and creative solutions to enable students to participate in the study abroad experience. Study abroad improves student learning by integrating knowledge with real life experiences, creates a lasting learning experience for everyone, promotes the colleges and their programs on a global level, and provides an opportunity where students and faculty develop a greater appreciation for other cultures and become more globally aware.
