Accessing information has radically changed through the advent of the internet, as have searching for—and finding—knowledge, news, and gossip. Dr. Patterson takes us back in time before “to google” became the synonym for searching the web, and looks at the different ways we’ve searched for information, from taxonomies to text to algorithms, and beyond. She explains these changes, presents the latest developments in internet search engines and how current developments will impact the future.

Dr. Patterson is Vice President of Engineering and Artificial Intelligence for Google. She was the architect of one of Google’s largest search serving systems TeraGoogle and also led efforts in Web Search, Ads and Shopping. The focus of her current work is on text understanding.

Her talk is part of the “Not on the Test: The Pleasures and Uses of Mathematics” series of six public lectures in 2014–15, which are jointly presented by the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) and Berkeley City College (BCC). They are made possible with funding from the Simons Foundation.

MSRI/BCC present “Brain- Computer Interfaces” with Dr. Philip Sabes, 7 p.m., Wed., Apr. 9

Philip_Sabes“Brain-Computer Interfaces,” with Dr. Philip Sabes will be presented  as part of “Not on the Test: The Pleasures and Uses of Mathematics,” the last of a six-part lecture series co-presented by Berkeley’s Mathematical Science and Research Institute (MSRI) and Berkeley City College (BCC).  The event is set for 7 p.m., Wed., Apr. 9,  in BCC’s auditorium, 2050 Center St. between Shattuck Ave. & Milvia St., in Berkeley.  It is free and open to the public.  Get your free tickets at http://philipsabes.bpt.me.    

Dr. Sabes will discuss the basic science and recent technical advances in the field of Brain-Machine interface development, including work from his own laboratory.  Brain-Machine Interfaces offer the promise of helping disabled patients by allowing them to control prosthetic limbs, computer interfaces, or other devices directly from the neural signals in their brain.   Dr. Sabes is a Professor of Physiology at the University of California, San Francisco and is director of UCSF’s Swartz Center for Theoretical Neurobiology.

P-SPAN – “Music, Computing and People” lecture by Dr. Ge Wang at Berkeley City College

The Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) and Berkeley City College (BCC) continued their “Not on the Test: The Pleasures and Uses of Mathematics” lecture series with “Music, Computing and People” a lecture by Dr. Ge Wang.  Dr. Wang, assistant professor at Stanford University’s Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA), researches programming languages and interactive software systems for computer music, mobile and social music, laptop orchestras, and education at the intersection of computer science and music.  He is the author of the ChucK audio programming language, is founding director of Stanford Laptop Orchestra (SLOrk) and of the Stanford Mobile Phone Orchestra (MoPhO).  He also co-founded Smule, and is the designer of the iPhone’s Ocarina and Magic Piano.  This event took place at Berkeley City College on February 12, 2014.
