The Fusion Theater Project’s Propulsive New Performance of Jon Tracy’s “The Farm”

26 February 2013

The Farm 96

You could call it a match made in hog heaven. “The Farm”—Bay Area luminary Jon Tracy’s brilliant adaptation of George Orwell’s “Animal Farm”—is propelled off the stage by the fresh, young talents of the Fusion Theater Project. The classic, scathing tale of overworked, mistreated farm animals who revolt against their human owners, speaks even more starkly to today’s generation—hungering for their place in the world amidst recession, revolution and environmental crises. Tracy’s boldly reimagined play brings rhythmic immediacy to the language and a score of stirring poignancy; The Fusion Theater Project’s diverse, youthful cast displays a depth of talent that infuses Orwell’s message with new clarity and urgency.

Director Michael Torres, a bold actor who has appeared for twenty-plus years on Bay Area stages, perhaps best known for his work with campo santo, envisions Fusion Theater as a place where young, raw actors train alongside professionals to create theater of startling relevance—bringing together the passions of youth with the wisdom of experience. Constantly pushing the boundaries of form, stripped-down stage design, and the fusion of movement, music, and words, Torres strives to reinvent what community college theater can be—with results that must be seen live on stage to be fully experienced.
