Update (5/25016):

Handout on Classroom Assessment Techniques

Lesson Plan: Group Activity

The world of community college is awash with terms like “Student Learning Outcomes” or “Teaching Philosophies,” and they can sound a bit theoretical or bureaucratic. What: This workshop will present what student learning outcomes are and how they influence our beliefs about teaching and learning.

Who: Mario Rivas, Psychology; Jennifer Shanoski, Chemistry

When: Friday, April 8, 10 am – 12 noon

Where: Merritt College, S-203 (Campus Map and Directions)

Why Should I Attend?: For applicants, this workshop may not have direct application, but it will help in the formation of thoughtful syllabi and serve as an introduction to important community college issues and practices.

Who Should Attend?: Any interested FDIP applicants, interns, or other instructional faculty.

How to RSVP? http://goo.gl/forms/O4vQc5j8IO

Workshop: Cultural Competency and Diversity Statements (Debrief)

26 October 2015

On Friday, October 23, 2015, FDIP held a workshop at Laney College. Miriam Zamora-Kantor, Staff Development Chair and DSPS counselor, both hosted the event and served on a panel with Dr. Donald Moore (Anthropology). Over forty participants attended the workshop. Below are the materials from the training:

Cultural Competency and Diversity Statements Agenda

Videos on Cultural Competency (We watched Valerie Purdie-Vaughns on Unintentional Bias)

AACU Intercultural Knowledge and Competence Rubric

Intercultural Knowledge and Competence in the Classroom Quadrants

Diversity Statement Guide

Workshop Evaluations

Comments from participants:

  • It opened a window for me in the way diversity reinforces and builds unity. The process of learning than just books and classes; it has other important components like cultural empathy.”
  • The questions that caused me to reflect on my cultural background and how that lens would affect my interactions with others; nice opener to a broad topic.”
  • “Meeting more FDIP folks, getting an idea of what a diversity statement is. Dr. Moore really got me thinking about the broad definition of diversity and how it applies in the classroom. He was excit[ing.]”
  • Having stories of faculty members was helpful; obtaining new information that strategically assists in crafting a diversity statement needed for college faculty interviews.”
