The June 11 meeting of the Peralta Colleges Board of Trustees featured the swearing-in of 2 newly elected Student Trustees. Next, the Board recognized Dr. Jacob Ng for his 24 years of service to the District. Following that, the Board was presented with the tentative 2013-2014 budget by Vice Chancellor Gerhard. And finally, College of Alameda President, Dr. Jannette Jackson, made the announcement that she will be leaving to become the new Chancellor for Chabot-Las Positas College District.

Simultaneous Interpretation: LCI 204 (3 units)

Acquisition and development of skills required in simultaneous interpretation in legal proceedings, such as arraignments, pretrial hearings, motions, pleas and sentencing as well as legal arguments, trials. Students are expected to have taken Introduction to legal Interpretation, Sight Translation and Consecutive Interpretation or equivalent courses. Simultaneous interpretation is one of components of the California Sate Exam for Spanish Interpreters. 

Preparation for the California State Exam: LCI 205 (2 units) Tuesday, Thursday 6-8:45pm 

Review of simultaneous, consecutive and sight translation skills required in judicial settings, with a focus on the types of written and oral questions and challenges applicants will have to answer in the Judicial Council of California’s Court Interpreter Written and Oral Examination. Review of basic language skills, including vocabulary, cognates and false cognates, idioms, synonyms, antonyms, English and Spanish syntax, reading comprehension. Review of the Professional Standards and Ethics for California Court Interpreters. Description of exam environment and preparation for practical and psychological challenges of exam.

The Laney College Music Department held their last concert of the school year, featuring performances by music department faculty and alumni, on May 15, 2013.

Professor Claudio Durán decided to create a transfer club at Merritt College with the intention of supporting minority students trying to navigate the transition to a four year college or university. Professor Durán chose to translate the word ‘Altazor’ to mean – ‘illuminate the path of knowledge’ or ‘a light of knowledge’.

In 2013 a total of 18 students from club Altazor were accepted to 4 year colleges, capturing the attention of local news. The club is open to students of Merritt College. It is mainly student operated and functions as a multi-disciplinary peer support group, under the guidance of Professor Durán and other staff advisors.

The EOPS Program (Extended Opportunity Programs and Services) at Laney College celebrated their graduation on May 14, 2013.

The Peralta College District hosted the annual Sustainability Festival on the Laney College Campus on April 25th, 2013. There were 50 plus vendors and organizations offering information on integrating sustainable living, a live band, dancing, free food and more!

The May 14 meeting of the Peralta Colleges Board of Trustees featured successful former students supporting the Student Ambassador program at Berkeley City College. Next, a presentation on Part-Time Faculty and Student Success. And finally, a recognition of outgoing Student Trustees Brian Cervantes and Sharon Clegg.
