The Laney College Carpentry Department partners with the City of Oakland and the Oakland Rotary Club to build and refurbish affordable homes. Slated to start a new house in East Oakland next year, they are currently building a small, portable home, the Dandelion. It is a fantastic opportunity for students to work on every element of a construction project from start to finish.

The PAAAA hosted the 14th Annual Student Scholarship Reception at the Peralta Community College District Atrium and this year’s ceremony was filled and charged with educational goal planning and achievement. In celebration of Earth Day, Laney College hosted the Seventh Annual Peralta Sustainability Conference on April 26th 2012.

Long Standing Organizer Nicky Gonzalez Yuen stressed that the Peralta Sustainability Movement is part of a continuing worldwide environmental and humanitarian obligation where education is key.

José M. Ortiz, Ed.D., Superintendent/President of Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria, Calif., and a former Laney College vice president, will be the next Chancellor of the 30,000-student Peralta Community College District, taking over the reins from Chancellor Wise E. Allen, Ph.D., a Peralta veteran, on July 2, 2012, pending contract finalization.

“Dr. Ortiz is a proven leader with great people skills and a sharp understanding of the challenges facing the diverse students of our four colleges,” said Board of Trustees President Cy Gulassa.

“He shows a strong commitment to building on the financial and governance reforms initiated by retiring Chancellor Allen, and will inspire faculty and staff to transform the Peralta Colleges into one of the finest community college systems in the nation.”

Ortiz was appointed Superintendent/President of Allan Hancock College in July 2005. In that position he has been responsible for a California community college serving more than 11,500 credit students and 5,500 noncredit students each semester. The college district spans 3,000 square miles in northern Santa Barbara County, and includes college campuses or centers in the cities of Santa Maria, Lompoc, Solvang and at Vandenberg AFB.

Prior to Allan Hancock College, Ortiz served as an educational administrator in several institutions of higher learning including Laney College in Oakland and Solano Community College in Fairfield, California; Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, Maryland; the University of Maryland, University College; and the University of Puerto Rico, Bayamon. Ortiz holds a doctorate degree in education policy, planning, and administration from the University of Maryland, College Park; a Master of Arts in teaching English as a Second Language from West Chester State University in Pennsylvania; and a Bachelor of Arts in English from Catholic University of Puerto Rico.

“Dr. Ortiz is well-seasoned and disciplined, an educational leader with the hands-on experience essential for guiding Peralta wisely through these historically hard times,” Gulassa added. Merritt Kids College offers a well-rounded program for boys and girls entering grades 6-9. Our mission is to nurture a habit of learning by providing opportunities for career and academic exploration, physical activity, and personal growth in a college setting. Merritt College faculty will teach a variety of classes including forensic science, Administration of Justice. fire science, EMT, nursing, Horticulture, and Merritt College coaches will lead campers in physical activities such as soccer, basketball and flag football.

There will also be interactive sessions on career exploration from Merritt College Counselors, as well as presentation which will help your children overcome peer pressure, drugs and violence, and prepare them for the road to college.

We will be having one camp session this summer, which will go from Monday, June 18th, until Thursday, June 28th (no classes on Saturday and Sunday). Tuition is now only $150! and will include all classes during the 9 days of camp. Campers must bring their own lunch and snacks.

All classes will take place on campus from 9 am to 4 pm, with after care available from 4 pm to 6 pm for an extra fee.

Each camper will receive a FREE Merritt Kids College T-shirt!

Laney College Baseball had a magnificent 2012 Season. Coach Francisco Zapata and staff led these student athletes to a Bay Valley Conference Championship title this year and earned them a shot at the state title. The 2012 CCCBCA Regional Playoff Series matched the #6 Laney Eagles against the #11 Sierra Wolverines in a best of 3 game series. PTVSports was on the scene for the Playoff weekend and here is our report.
