International Specialist Matthew Jones recently attended the NAFSA Management Development Program (MDP) at Portland State University. This highly selective managerial training program was designed to facilitate leadership training to a cohort of twelve professionals in the field of international education. In three days, the NAFSA MDP covered several modules of managerial training including: situational leadership, managing change, identifying stakeholders, organizational culture and politics, budgeting, sustaining a healthy work/life balance and other valuable skills.
Matthew’s favorite module came from the situational leadership section where he learned that, “People’s competencies and commitment levels will change depending on the individual task. Therefore, our leadership styles must adapt to these changes as well”. Matthew was then trained to develop the four managerial styles of directing, coaching, supporting, and delegating.
Mr. Jones is currently participating in the NAFSA Academy; an intensive year-long training program comprised of three training events, written assignments, regular cohort conference calls, and individual coaching. Completing the MDP was a goal that Mr. Jones set as part of his NAFSA Academy curriculum.
Matthew is excited about the opportunity to increase his leadership role in the Office of International Education by implementing the knowledge and resources obtained through the NAFSA MDP.
