The Office of International Education and Peralta Colleges Foundation of Peralta Community College District will be hosting its inaugural Study Abroad Fundraising Event, “A Night at Yoshi’s Oakland featuring Jonah Melvon & Adesha”, to raise monies for our local students to support and expand their horizons in their quest to become a global citizen in the 21st century. We would be so honored if you and/or your company join us as a sponsorship partner and attend the event.
Your support will provide scholarships to students in need so that they may have the resources for this once in a lifetime experience. In 2019, the Peralta Colleges are planning to offer up to 11 programs in Japan, Taiwan, Belize, New Zealand, Germany, Mexico, Egypt, London, China, Ghana and Costa Rica (http://web.peralta.edu/international/study-abroad).
The event will be held at the renowned jazz supper club Yoshi’s Oakland on Thursday, April 4, 2019 from 8pm – 10pm featuring entertainment by local sensations Jonah Melvon featuring Adesha. Jonah and Adesha are more than Oakland natives who share a passion for the arts, they also happen to be siblings. This year they decided to bring the household back together again, as they tour on Jonah’s latest record “RainWater Project”, with teasers from his first record “This is the Year”. This soulful, lyrical, warm hearted dual, is proud to be bringing their home away from home experience, to listeners worldwide
Since 1964, the Peralta Community College District (Berkeley City College, College of Alameda, Laney College and Merritt College) has been providing educational services for individuals of our community seeking to provide themselves with higher education opportunities. Since many of our students are from low-socioeconomic families, studying abroad has never been a major priority for them. With your help, we can change that mentality.
According to the Institute for International Education (IIE), fewer than 10% of American college students participate in international study programs, and less than 25% of those students are from underrepresented minority groups. The study abroad experience can be a life-changing event that can provide a student with a new found sense of confidence or independence, a new foreign language skill, an increased ability to work in diverse work environments and most importantly the opportunity to explore new cultures.
Please contact me directly at email@example.com or 510-587-7834 for any questions you may have. We sincerely thank you for your time and continued support.

Gephart, Drew A. "Low-Cost Initiatives for Expanding Study Abroad Opportunities" (Chapter 11 - pages 158-171)
ABSTRACT: Community colleges without a budget strictly allocated to study abroad programs need to be creative in how they expand opportunities for their students. This chapter will focus on the strategies developed by the Peralta Community College District’s Office of International Education to develop a stronger study abroad program with limited resources and staffing. After the Peralta Colleges committed to the Institute of International Education’s Generation Study Abroad initiative in 2014, it created new study abroad programs, organized annual study abroad fairs, was awarded a scholarship of $7,500, created new promotional materials and an administrative procedure, launched a new website and newsletter, organized financial aid workshops and professional development day presentations for faculty and opened a study abroad scholarship through its Foundation. The chapter will share how other colleges can learn from these efforts and institutionalize study abroad on their campuses.

We are working with a network preparing a Student Feedback feature on the USA for the March 2019 issue of Study Travel Magazine.
The aim of the feature is to build up a profile of overseas students studying on English language programmes in the USA, and to find out students' opinions about their course and location. The feature is a "snap-shot" portrait of international students studying in the country.
If you would like to participate in the survey, please fill out the attached questionnaire and email it back to firstname.lastname@example.org no later than Monday, December 10th.
