Noncredit Instruction is one of several educational options offered within the California Community College System. Noncredit Instruction has been described as an “educational gateway” or a “portal to the future”.

It serves as a key contributor to “open access” for students with diverse backgrounds and those seeking ways to improve their earning power, literacy skills, and access to higher education. For many, particularly immigrants, the economically disadvantaged, and low-skilled working adults, it is the first point of entry into a college.

It offers students access to a variety of no-cost courses that can assist them in reaching their personal and professional goals. Noncredit courses are intended to provide students with lifelong learning, college transfer, and career preparation opportunities. Although students may not initially need or desire unit credit, noncredit often serves as the first point of entry for many under-served students as well as a transition point to credit instruction.
