Here’s William Escobar’s story, an alum of the Environmental Control Technology Program at Laney College: “I am sharing my story today as a testimony to the Laney College mission statement. My life will never be the same because of the educational opportunity I had at Laney College. My story begins on the day I met Nick Kyriakopedi, the Environmental Control Technology (ECT) Department Chair. As a senior in high school I was looking for a program to meet my school’s graduation requirements. My mother, who was a Laney College student at the time, heard about opportunities at the ECT program. I applied and excelled through the program and landed a job at Carrier Corporation. I am now a top paid journeyman technician and have a prosperous career ahead of me. I purchased my first house in 2009 at the age of 20, and this year I purchased my second house, this one for my mother. It is astonishing to reflect back to just half a decade ago when the three of us were surviving on welfare after my father passed away. My life’s story is only beginning. I hope to become part of the outstanding faculty at Laney, and as an instructor to inspire a vision of success in students that their vision can become their reality. I know from experience because it happened to me. I am living my vision.” Contact Laney ECT to sign up for classes at (510) 464-3292.
