Black Panther Documentary Screening at City Hall
Congresswoman Barbara Lee Will Be Present at the Screening to Offer Opening Remarks
 
Few know that the Black Panther Party was founded at Merritt College in Oakland in October 1966, and many of its early social justice programs still largely go unrecognized.
 
The television station of the Peralta Community College District, Peralta TV, produced a national award-winning film, “Merritt College: Home of the Black Panthers,” narrated by U. S. Congresswoman Barbara Lee, about the origins of the Black Panther Party at Merritt College. The film, which was shown at the United Nations as part of the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery, features rare interviews with Black Panther founder Bobby Seale, as well as members David Hilliard, Ericka Huggins, Elbert ‘Big Man’ Howard, Emory Douglas and Richard Aoki.
 
The City of Alameda is happy to partner with the Peralta Colleges in bringing this illuminating film to Alameda.
 
What: Merritt College: Home of the Black Panthers (Documentary Film Screening)
 
When: Saturday, October 14, 12:00-1:30pm
 
Where: Alameda City Hall, City Council Chambers, 2263 Santa Clara Avenue, 3rd Floor, Alameda
 
Who: The screening is free and open to the public. Speakers include U.S. Congresswoman Barbara Lee, Alameda Mayor Trish Herrera Spencer, and the film’s executive producer and director, Jeffrey Heyman, and writer and producer, James Calhoun.

Faculty Spotlight: Daniela Nikolaeva Pachtrapanska, Laney College Graphic Arts

DanielaDaniela Nikolaeva Pachtrapanskatakes some time out of her busy schedule teaching Graphic Arts courses at Laney College to share her success story with Peralta TV. During the dark communist era, she was at the frontline in the fight for democracy. She escaped the war-ridden Balkan Peninsula to pursue her creative passions and career in art. She painted and sold her artworks in Italy and France, taught design and languages classes at the ‘Place of Culture in Prague’, The Czech Republic and decided from there to immigrate to California. Once a student of the Peralta Colleges herself, she decided to give back to her Alma Matter and become a faculty member where she now teaches Design and Multimedia classes at Laney College!

Welcome to Board Spotlight, a brief re-cap of the bi-weekly meeting of the Peralta Colleges Board of Trustees.

At the October 20 meeting, Chancellor Laguerre update the Board on his visits to our colleges.

The Peralta Federation of Teachers recognized the outstanding work of our Human Resources Department in hiring 41 new full time faculty this year.

And Vice Chancellor of Finance Ron Little provided an update on our progress resolving external audit findings.

The Peralta Colleges Board of Trustees meet the second and forth Tuesday of every month. All meetings are open to the Public, and are broadcast LIVE on peraltaTV. Past meetings are available for viewing here.

Berkeley City College student Rachel Harkleroad takes time out of her busy schedule to talk with Peralta TV about her passion for video game development.

Berkeley City College’s Multimedia Arts Program prepares people for entry-level jobs in multimedia and provides skills-upgrading for those already employed in multimedia jobs.

The program is interdisciplinary and focuses on developing fine art, critical thinking, and computer skills.

The Bay Area is a hot bed for the gaming and tech industry, you can get the skills needed to be part of the gaming industry right here at Berkeley City College!

At the June 9 meeting, the Peralta Colleges Board of Trustees announced their selection of Dr. Jowel C. Laguerre as the next Chancellor of the Peralta Colleges. They also swore-in new Student Trustees and honored outgoing Academic Senate President Dr. Karolyn van Putten. Vice Chancellor Rinne presented the tentative 2015-2016 budget. And Vice Chancellor Ikharo and Sustainability Manager Neal provided the annual Environmental Sustainability Report.

Peralta TV’s Black Panthers Documentary Now Streaming

In honor of Black History Month, Peralta TV is now streaming its award-winning documentary “Merritt College: Home of the Black Panthers.” The documentary won a national best college video award and was featured at the United Nations’ International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery.
