Peralta Colleges FM Radio Station On the Air in July

2 February 2015

Peralta FM Station-1

For the first time in its 50-year history, the Peralta Colleges will have its own FM radio station to provide educational programming to the community and hands-on broadcast experience to our students.

The FCC granted the Peralta Community College District a Low Power FM Community Broadcast Station license (“construction permit”) after a lengthy application process. There was plenty of competition for the broadcast licenses following a rule change by the FCC, and Peralta’s Public Information Department was successful in its bid to broadcast on one of the two available frequencies in the Bay Area.

Beginning in July, you will be able to hear Peralta’s community radio station in the East Bay at 96.9 FM. The tentative call sign is KGPC.

If you would like to get involved in Peralta’s community radio station, please contact our Executive Director for Public Information, Communications and Media, Jeff Heyman, at or 510-466-7369.

Don’t forget to tune into all the great programs on our Internet radio station, 9th Floor Radio, at

Peralta’s Public Information Department Wins NCMPR Gold, Silver Awards

6 October 2014

PCCD_AnnouncementThe Peralta Community College District is pleased to announce that its Public Information Department has recently been awarded two gold Medallion Awards by the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR), District 6, which includes community colleges in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Utah, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of Palau, Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Territory of Guam.

The first gold Medallion was for best Original Photograph for a picture of a Laney College student by department staffer Faiza Ali. The runners up were Western Nevada College and San Diego Mesa.

The second gold Medallion Award was for best Online Advertising for the new enrollment look on Peralta’s Website and its social media efforts to build enrollment, specifically Facebook and Twitter messaging to students. There was no silver award; Mt. San Antonio received a Bronze for their online efforts.

Last fall, Peralta TV, also part of the Public Information Department, won a national NCMPR Silver Paragon Award for its monthly public affairs program, “Peralta Matters,” hosted by the department’s Jay Calhoun. The winning episode was the two-part series “The Summer of Science,” which profiled several Peralta students as well as many of the exceptional science programs offered by the Peralta Colleges. Watch the program and hundreds of other videos about the Peralta Colleges at the Peralta TV YouTube Channel:

Peralta is particularly proud of the Online Gold Medallion as it demonstrates that the District is a leader among community colleges in its social media outreach efforts. Public Information staff have worked hard to build up Peralta’s social media and outreach efforts over the past several years and it appears to be an effective way to reach students and the community.

Recent survey data shows that the Public Information Department’s outreach efforts “extremely” or “moderately” influenced the decision of 21.4% of Peralta’s students to enroll at Berkeley City College, College of Alameda or Oakland’s Laney and Merritt Colleges.

50thIf you missed the Peralta Colleges 50th Anniversary celebrations over the summer, you can now watch video of the events on Peralta TV’s YouTube Channel by following the links below.

Commemoration Day was held on July 1, 2014, 50 years to the day of the founding of the District on July 1, 1964. There was an inspiring keynote address by State Chancellor Brice Harris as well as remarks by local mayors, Peralta trustees, Chancellor José M. Ortiz, our college presidents and others, all hosted by Burt Dragin of Laney College. Don’t miss the heartfelt rendition of ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’ sung by our very own Rosemary Vazquez. A time capsule made by the Laney College Carpentry students highlighted the festivities and was installed to memorialize this once-in-a-lifetime milestone.

There was also a Community Festival held on Saturday, June 28, to celebrate Peralta’s 50th Anniversary. The day was filled with music, dance, college booths, great food and all things Peralta. It was a wonderful community turnout that celebrated the Peralta Community College District’s golden anniversary!

Peralta TV also produced a tribute to our 50 years of serving students. You can view all the videos here:

The Peralta Colleges are pleased to feature two videos that you will enjoy.

The first, produced by Peralta TV, features this year’s Chancellor’s Trophy winners who will be honored at tonight’s Foundation dinner. Their stories, introduced by Chancellor José M. Ortiz, are truly inspirational and point to the success of our students at Peralta.  Let’s congratulate these fine students and the faculty and staff who made their success possible.

See video here:

KPIX Channel 5 recently aired a report on how Laney College is helping to fill manufacturing jobs. This is the kind of report that highlights what we do at the Peralta Colleges. Nice job, Louis Quindlen and the team at Laney!
