Alumni Spotlight: Vincent Garrett

Vincent Garrett thought Laney College had helped him turned his life around when he finished his apprenticeship and joined the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW 595). But his story and journey had Peralta had only begun. See what led him to help develop the Restoring Our Communities Initiative at Laney College to help support our formerly incarcerated students.

Student Spotlight – Maria Garcia Alvarez

Maria found a future and career in a field that is both rewarding and stable through the HVAC program at Laney College. She takes time from her busy day to talk with Peralta TV about her experiences and rewards from remaining determined.

The Environmental Control Technology Department (ECT) offers technical certificates and associate degrees in Residential and Light Commercial HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) as well as Commercial HVAC systems, with new certificates and degrees in Building Automation Systems and energy management in development. Students in these programs learn the theoretical, technical and problem-solving skills essential for employment in the HVACR or controls industries. Students completing the curriculum can seek employment as refrigeration technicians, heating, ventilation, air conditioning technicians, sales engineers, equipment and system installers, parts persons, operations and maintenance technicians, building engineers, controls technicians, and energy specialists.

The ECT Department occupies a space of over 8,000 square feet. The program provides theoretical content, and extensive hands-on labs on refrigeration systems, light commercial and commercial air conditioning and heating equipment, boilers, chillers, hydronic HVAC systems, and building automation control systems.

Student Spotlight – Rachel Harkleroad

Berkeley City College student Rachel Harkleroad takes time out of her busy schedule to talk with Peralta TV about her passion for video game development.

Berkeley City College’s Multimedia Arts Program prepares people for entry-level jobs in multimedia and provides skills-upgrading for those already employed in multimedia jobs.

The program is interdisciplinary and focuses on developing fine art, critical thinking, and computer skills.

The Bay Area is a hot bed for the gaming and tech industry, you can get the skills needed to be part of the gaming industry right here at Berkeley City College!

Meet Marie Beunaiche, returning student who made the leap from a job with no opportunities to following her goal of working in aviation maintenance. The Aviation Maintenance Technology (AMT) Program provides an opportunity for students to gain the skills needed to work in a number of Airframe and/or Powerplant (A&P) careers. Conveniently located in a well-equipped facility adjacent to the Oakland International Airport.

The Laney CalWORKs Program “LaneyWORKs” is dedicated to providing a wealth of supportive student services to ensure each student a success! Since 1998, Laney College has taught, trained, counseled and helped students on Temporary Aid to Needy Families (TANF) find a job through its CalWORKs Program.

Extended Opportunity Program and Services (EOPS)
EOPS was established in 1969 as a social reform program of the California Community Colleges. EOPS develops programs and services to meet the unique educational needs of students challenged by language, social, and economic disadvantages.
