Peralta Community College District Board of Trustees Unanimously Passes Resolution Affirming Commitment to African American Students

16 June 2020

OAKAND, CA – The Peralta Community College District (PCCD) Board of Trustees unanimously passed a resolution entitled Affirming Our Commitment To Student Success For African American Students. As an institution that has long fostered and embodied social justice teachings, the district’s “commitment to diversity and inclusion also requires advocating and employing our collective voice to identify and eliminate barriers to equity.”

“I thank the Peralta Community College District Board of Trustees for their commitment to African American Student Success,” said Chancellor Dr. Regina Stanback Stroud. “The Board recognizes the impact Peralta Community College District can have on removing institutional racism that creates and maintains disparities for Black students in health, education, housing, employment, income, and opportunity. The African American community entrusts us as educators with their lives, stories, culture – their hopes and dreams – We must not fail our community.”

72% of all Black undergraduates enrolled in higher education in California are enrolled in California community colleges. The majority of these students are adult learners who work full-time while attending college part-time due to family commitments and a struggle with basic needs insecurities. With this resolution, the PCCD commits to working collaboratively with internal and external partners to remove these barriers to Black students; fostering a culture where all members of the Black community are safe, respected and valued; maintaining a strong commitment to antiracist efforts; and supporting funding and policy recommendations that further these efforts. The full text of the resolution can be found here.
