In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Peralta Community College District, which was founded in 1964, Peralta TV has produced a short video, “50 Years: The History of the Peralta Community College District.” This look at our history will premiere tonight, Thursday, Oct. 30, at the 50th Anniversary Grand Reception, hosted by the Peralta Colleges Foundation at Merritt College. If you missed the Peralta Colleges 50th Anniversary celebrations over the summer, you can now watch video of the events on Peralta TV’s YouTube Channel by following the links below.
Commemoration Day was held on July 1, 2014, 50 years to the day of the founding of the District on July 1, 1964. There was an inspiring keynote address by State Chancellor Brice Harris as well as remarks by local mayors, Peralta trustees, Chancellor José M. Ortiz, our college presidents and others, all hosted by Burt Dragin of Laney College. Don’t miss the heartfelt rendition of ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’ sung by our very own Rosemary Vazquez. A time capsule made by the Laney College Carpentry students highlighted the festivities and was installed to memorialize this once-in-a-lifetime milestone.
There was also a Community Festival held on Saturday, June 28, to celebrate Peralta’s 50th Anniversary. The day was filled with music, dance, college booths, great food and all things Peralta. It was a wonderful community turnout that celebrated the Peralta Community College District’s golden anniversary!

At the July 15 Board of Trustees meeting, a California State Assembly Resolution by Assemblymember Rob Bonta, Assemblymember Nancy Skinner and Senator Loni Hancock commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Peralta Community College District was presented to the Chancellor and Board by Jim Oddie, District Director for Assemblymember Bonta. Don’t miss the Peralta Colleges CommUNITY Festival, Saturday, June 28, 2014 • 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., at Peralta District Headquarters, 333 E. 8th St., in Oakland.
We will be celebrating our 50th Anniversary with festivities all day long. There will be bands, dancers, college displays and booths, community organizations, fun for kids and great food. The CommUNITY Festival is free and open to the everyone!

This year, the Peralta Community College District will celebrate its 50th Anniversary of serving the community with quality and affordable education.
Peralta Community College District was established on July 1, 1964, after residents of Alameda, Albany, Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland, and Piedmont voted to join in establishing a single community college district.
Since opening its doors, Peralta has educated, trained and mentored over one million individuals.
Its four colleges – Berkeley City College, College of Alameda, Laney College, and Merritt College – have offered a wide range of programs encompassing the fields that are vital to the Bay Area economy and that have been developed in collaboration with our many community partners to ensure the local needs for a capable workforce can be met.
To recognize our collective achievements, Peralta will host a series of events to commemorate its 50th Anniversary.
The celebratory festivities begin with a CommUNITY Festival, Saturday, June 28, 2014 • 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. • On the grounds of the Peralta District Headquarters at 333 E. 8th St. • Oakland.
We will have a Commemoration Day ceremony, Tuesday, July 1, 2014 • 10 a.m. • In the atrium of the Peralta District Headquarters at 333 E. 8th St. • Oakland.
We are proud of our role in providing 50 years of public higher education to the East Bay and beyond and invite you to join with us in celebrating this momentous occasion.
