Karen Weinstein Elected to Peralta Community College District Board of Trustees for Area 6

karen_with_blue_shirt_copyOAKLAND, Calif., Nov. 9, 2016 Karen Weinstein, a well-known education advocate and community activist, has been elected to represent Area 6, which includes portions of North Oakland and the Berkeley Hills, on the Board of Trustees for the Peralta Community College District.

Weinstein won the seat held by Cy Gulassa, who announced his retirement, effective at the end of this year’s term. Weinstein will be sworn-in at a special organizational meeting of the Board of Trustees on December 13, 2016.

“I’m looking forward to having Karen serving on the Board with us, and working together to provide educational opportunities for our community’s students,” said Board President William “Bill” Riley

“We are pleased that the voters have chosen such a well qualified candidate to serve on our Board,” said Peralta Colleges Chancellor Jowel C. Laguerre, Ph.D. “I look forward to working closely with the Trustee-Elect in offering our students equal access to education and a myriad of career preparation and university transfer programs.”

“I also want to thank Nick Resnick for his candidacy, his interest in supporting our students and for standing up for community educational issues during his campaign,” the Chancellor added.                                  

Karen Weinstein, who currently sits on the Peralta District Citizens’ Oversight Committee, has been a champion for accessible college opportunities for all. She is a Board Member of the Berkeley Public Schools Fund and is Vice-Chair of the Berkeley Commission on the Status of Women. Weinstein serves as Co-Chair of the California Democratic Party’s Affirmative Action Committee and is a member-elect to the Alameda County Democratic Central Committee.

In addition, she serves as community liaison for the Dreamers and Undocumented Student Task Force and is a member of Berkeley City College’s President’s Advisory Board, and last year, she was acknowledged for her leadership with a Berkeley City College award for her “unshakable commitment to transforming student lives at Berkeley City College.” 

Weinstein received her Ph.D. in Counselor Education, with a concentration in college counseling from the School of Education, State University of New York at Buffalo.  She is a Licensed California Psychologist.

Peralta Community College District Board of Trustees Elect New Slate of Officers for 2016

Board OfficersThe Peralta Community College District’s Board of Trustees, at its annual organizational meeting held on December 9, 2015, elected new officers for 2016.

William “Bill” Riley, Ed.D., who represents Area 5, was elected President of the nine-member board, and Julina Bonilla, representing Area 7, was elected Vice President. Jowel C. Laguerre, Ph.D, Chancellor of the District, was elected Board Secretary. Outgoing president, Meredith Brown, who represents Area 2, was honored at the meeting for her work leading the Board in 2015.

Nicky González Yuen, Area 4, Cy Gulassa, Area 6, Linda Handy, Area 3, Bill Withrow, Area 1, and Meredith Brown, continue to serve on the Board. Student Trustees Adrien Abuyen and Justin Hyche also serve on the nine-member board.

“I look forward to working with my fellow Trustees, and Chancellor Laguerre, in the coming year to ensure that the Peralta Colleges continue to provide educational opportunities to our community’s students,” said President Riley.

“The key initiatives I will personally be committed to this year are closing the achievement gap, addressing accreditation matters and providing scholarships for our students to ensure everyone who wants to can go to one of our four community colleges,” President Riley added.

President Riley was first elected to the Board of Trustees in 1998 and represents an area that includes Oakland’s Rockridge District and the City of Piedmont. He has served as President of the Board twice and also as Vice President. He is a Merritt College alumnus and served as Student Body President. Dr. Riley has worked in public education for over 40 years, including at the Alameda County Office of Education, the Oakland Unified School District, the East Palo Alto/Ravenswood and the San Ramon School Districts. He earned an Ed.D., in Educational Policy and a B.A. in Sociology and Physical Education from the University of San Francisco and an M.A. in Educational Administration from San Francisco State University.

Vice President Bonilla is a Solano Community College graduate and received her B. A. from U. C. Berkeley. She is a former Oakland elementary school teacher and eventually moved into workforce development providing education and job training to young adults in Northern California. Her community work and active memberships include serving as the Board Vice President of Tradeswomen Inc. and in the National Women’s Political Caucus-AN. She has served as a member of the Oakland Workforce Investment Board and co-chair of the Oakland Youth Council. Currently, she is the Program Director of the West Oakland Job Resource Center. She was first elected to the board in 2014.

Peralta Colleges Trustees Sworn-In, New Board Officers Elected For 2015

The Peralta Community College District Board of Trustees, at its annual organizational meeting held on December 9, 2014, elected a new slate of officers for 2015. Additionally, a newly elected trustee and two trustees, reelected in November, were sworn-in to serve for the next four years.

Meredith Brown, who represents Area 2, was elected president and Dr. William “Bill” Riley, who represents Area 5, was elected vice president of the nine-member board, which includes two student trustees.

Julina Bonilla, who was elected in November to represent Area 7, was sworn-in by Abel Guillén, the outgoing Area 7 Trustee who was elected to the Oakland City Council in November. Linda Handy, Area 3, and William “Bill” Riley, both re-elected in November’s election, were sworn-in, respectively, by former Assemblymember Sandré Swanson, who is Deputy Mayor of the City of Oakland, and Judge Gordon Baranco, Superior Court of California, County of Alameda.

“I am both pleased and honored to serve as president of the Board,” Brown said. “One of our first actions starting off our new year was to approve the terms of an agreement that will provide construction related apprenticeship positions for students in Laney College’s Construction Management Program to work on Peralta’s capital construction projects.” 

“We will continue to build partnerships with the local building trades, public transit agencies and the health industry, and we will work closely with our K-12 and county education partners to prepare our students for California’s changing economy,” said Brown. “We will continue to provide a well supported pathway for students transferring to our CSU and UC systems,” Brown Added. 

Brown, first elected to the Board of Trustees in 2012, is an attorney with over 20 years of experience in complex litigation and representing public agencies. She received her Bachelor of Science from Cornell University and her Juris Doctor Degree from Boston University School of Law. Brown served as a clerk for United States Magistrate Joyce London Alexander, First Circuit in Boston, Mass. Her community involvement includes service as a delegate to the 2008 Democratic National Convention, and leadership with the Alameda County Democratic Lawyers Club, Montclair Soccer Club, National Women Political Caucus – Alameda County North, and a volunteer Judge Pro Tem for Alameda County.  

Newly elected trustee Julina Bonilla is a community college graduate and received her B.A. from U. C. Berkeley. She is a former Oakland elementary teacher who moved into workforce development, providing education and job training to young adults in Northern California. Linda Handy, who was first elected in 2002, has a long resume of community service and college administration experience. She has a M.S. in Organizational Development and Analysis from the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University. Handy is a Laney College alumna and a former president of the Oakland Coalition of Congregations.

William “Bill” Riley was first elected to the Board of Trustees in 1998 and is a Merritt College alumnus who has served in public education for over 30 years, including in the Oakland, East Palo Alto/Ravenswood and San Ramon School districts. He earned his Ed.D. in Educational Policy and a B.A. in Sociology and Physical Education from the University of San Francisco and an M.A. in Educational Administration from San Francisco State University. 

Continuing to serve on the board are Bill Withrow, who represents Area 1, Nicky González Yuen, Area 4, and Cy Gulassa of Area 6.  Student trustees are Carl Oliver and Jeramy Rolley. 

For 50 years, the Peralta Community College District has served the cities of Alameda, Albany, Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland and Piedmont by providing 30,000 students each semester with a range of educational programs and life-long learning opportunities.

Peralta Community College District Governing Board Elects New Officers for 2012

At its annual organizational meeting held on December 6, 2011, the Governing Board for The Peralta Community College District (Berkeley City College, College of Alameda, and Laney and Merritt Colleges in Oakland) elected a new slate of officers for 2012.

Cy Gulassa, representing Area 6, was elected President and Dr. William “Bill” Riley, who represents Area 5 was elected Vice President of the nine-member Board.

“I am very pleased to be elected to serve as Board President and look forward to serving not only my constituents but the whole of the district in the coming year,” said Gulassa. “My priorities include implementing our district-wide strategic plan, conducting vigilant oversight of bond expenditures and expanding student access, equity and success,” Gulassa said.

Dr. Riley stated, “I look forward to working together with students, faculty, staff, and the community, as we guide our colleges through these difficult economic times.”
