A Community College Education and Your Pathway to a Career is in the Neighborhood!

In partnership with Oakland Unified School District, Peralta Community College District Chancellor Jowel Laguerre and Board Trustees are excited to host its next Chancellor’s Town Hall Meeting on Wednesday, November 15th, at Fremont High School, 4610 Foothill Blvd, off High Street in Oakland from 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm.

The Chancellor’s Town Hall Meeting, a series of community conversations, showcase Peralta Colleges’ wealth of career technical and academic programs, throughout the Peralta Colleges district community areas. At the Town Hall Meetings, a suite of enrollment services and representatives are also on-hand to provide information on financial aid, admissions, counseling and more, in an effort to assist potential students to navigate the process with ease.

Last month Governor Jerry Brown signed new legislation to make community college free for all full-time students in California. Peralta Colleges and Oakland Unified School District’s collaborative work aims to ensure our communities are aware of the new law to increase the number of students who enroll in community college full-time, as well as the number of people who are prepared for careers that support their families.

Light food, networking and information table highlighting career technical and trades programs will begin at 5:30 pm in the Cafe. The program presentations will take place in the Auditorium with OUSD staff and a conversation with Peralta Chancellor Jowel Laguerre and Peralta alumni.

Study Abroad Financial Aid Workshop at Laney College, November 5

If you are interested in studying abroad but not sure how you can afford to, or how to assist students, come to this very important information STUDY ABROAD FINANCIAL AID WORKSHOP. Representatives from Financial Aid will speak to PCCD faculty, staff and students about how to apply for financial aid to help cover the costs of studying abroad. You don’t want to miss this event!

Peralta News – Board Spotlight February 12, 2013

The February 12, 2013 meeting of the Board of Trustees started with an extensive discussion of the Financial Aid situation. While many acknowledged progress has been made, too many of our students still struggle to navigate the system. Vice Chancellor of Academic Services Michael Orkin provided a positive report on our enrollment numbers. And finally, a spirited discussion of a Board Policy regarding political activity. Entire meetings are available for viewing on the internet.

Peralta News – Board Spotlight June 12, 2012

The June 12 meeting started off with the swearing in of our new Student Trustees Sharon Clegg and Brian Cervantes. Next up, a Study Session on Financial Aid, and then a presentation on the Laney Sustainability Center. The Board presented a proclamation honoring Congresswoman Barbara Lee for her continued support of the Peralta Colleges. The Board received a check for their participation in the Oakland Shines program and heard of the 2012 – 2013 Tentative Budget. Lastly, the Board announced the finalization of the contract for Peralta’s new Chancellor, Dr. Jose Ortiz.

Peralta News – Board Spotlight March 27, 2012

The March 27 meeting started with an update from the Stop the Swap Coalition, followed by a large group of students from Laney College voicing concerns about the financial aid system. Next up, a positive budget update from Vice Chancellor of Finance Ron Gerhard. And the District received a $6000 rebate from PG&E for our efforts to reduce energy use during peak demand.
