Don’t Miss Your Gateway to College!

Gateway Grads1

Laney College’s Gateway to College at Laney College (GtC-LC) was launched in 2009 in partnership with Oakland Unified School District as an alternative education high school. The program provides Oakland residents who are between the ages of 16 to 20 years old with an opportunity to experience success in an academically rigorous environment as they pursue their diploma and transition into a college. Gateway helps to facilitate a student’s transition towards a postsecondary degree or credential by enabling participants to earn high school and college credits simultaneously. This dual (high school and college) credit program promotes student success and readiness by grouping students into learning communities and providing them with individualized support and counseling so they are academically, socially and emotionally prepared to succeed in college.

Each Fall and Spring semesters, up to 50 new students take part in the foundation or initial GtC-LC learning community. Program participants are registered as Laney students and have access to all services and resources available on the Laney campus. Dedicated program counselors provide academic and non-academic supports to ensure our students’ success by helping them to find direction and to remain focused on their academic and long-term goals while urging them to become more engaged and connected on campus. Subsequently, after the “foundation” semester, students enroll in mainstream college classes with continuing support from GtC-LC counselors, tutors and staff. Students graduate from the program when they complete all of the courses necessary to complete their high school graduation requirements.

The program’s main goal is to prepare young people to access the education and training needed for living wage jobs; stressing that high school diplomas and GEDs should not be considered terminal credentials; and that students who have previously struggled academically can be successful in earning a college degree or credential. Last fiscal year, a total of 138 students participated in the program and program graduates earned on average, 100 high school credits and 35 college credits. In the 2013, thirteen students graduated from GtC and received their high school diplomas from Oakland Unified. Many of these students are continuing their studies at Laney.

If GtC-LC sounds like it could be the program for you, please call 510-986-6941 or email us at to reserve your place at an upcoming information session. Remember we can only enroll about 50 students each term and we are actively recruiting for the fall, so contact us now!
