PAAAA Honors 2014 Student Scholarship Recipients

The Peralta Association of African American Affairs (PAAAA) held its 16th annual scholarship reception on Friday, May 2, 2014.

With a record number of applicants, PAAAA recognized nine African American students attending Berkeley City College, College of Alameda, Laney College and Merritt College, who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership skills, and community service in the various communities where they live, work and study.

Since 1998, PAAAA has distributed over $65,000 in scholarships to Peralta students.

Peralta News – Gateway to College at Laney College

Gateway to College is a scholarship program that provides academically and economically disenfranchised Alameda County residents 16 to 20 years old with an opportunity to experience success in an academically rigorous, supportive and safe environment as they pursue their high school diplomas and transition into a college.

To keep students on the right track to success, one-on-one support is provided by dedicated GtC counselors. All GtC classes are college classes, and the program is fully integrated with Laney College.

Interested students 16 -- 20 are welcomed to apply. Enrollments are once a year so please contact Gateway to College staff to start on the application process. click here

Aviation Maintenance Technology Student at the College of Alameda Receives Scholarship

Marie Beunaiche, a student at College of Alameda’s Aviation Maintenance Technology Program was recently awarded a $1,500 scholarship from the Northern California Business Aviation Association, NCBAA.  Ms. Beunaiche is a reentry student seeking a second career.

This scholarship was awarded through Snap-On to help Marie purchase tools needed for the AMT program.  Along with the scholarship came mentoring from members of NCBAA to help Marie succeed in aviation maintenance.

Congratulations Marie on your achievement of this honor in the Aviation Maintenance Technology Program at College of Alameda.

Atech Student Saddiki Abdelhafid Awarded Ozzie Day Scholarship

Abdelhafid Saddiki, a second-year student in the T-TEN Atech program at the College of Alameda, was awarded the Ozzie Day Scholarship today.

Abdelhafid is 28 years old. He was born in Morocco and studied at the Institute of Vocational Automotive Training in Morocco, worked at a Kia dealership and helped his brother set up an independent garage before coming to the United States in 2011. He enrolled in English classes when he first arrived and, after about six months, he started taking Toyota T-TEN automotive classes at the College of Alameda. He is now working at a Toyota dealership and will complete the COA Toyota T-TEN program at the end of May. His goal is to return someday to Morocco as a master technician or an engineer.

The Ozzie Day Scholarship is a $500 scholarship which is awarded by the Atech Department each semester to the student with the highest grade point average and the most units in the Atech Program. The scholarship was set up in memory of Ozzie Day, the founder of Automotive Engineering and a long-time member of the COA Automotive Advisory committee.

16th Annual PAAAA Scholarship Reception – Friday, May 2

The Peralta Association of African American Affairs (PAAAA) scholarship recognizes eight (8) African American students attending Berkeley City College, College of Alameda, Laney College and Merritt College, who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership skills, and community service in the various communities where they live, work and study.

Since 1998, PAAAA has distributed over $60,000 in scholarships to PCCD students to assist them in continuing their education.

PAAAA will host its 16th annual student scholarship reception on Friday, May 2, 2014 in the atrium of the District Office at 5:30pm.

Congratulations to Laney College Culinary Arts student Shana Waquia, who was recently honored with a scholarship from the Golden Gate Restaurant Association for $5,000 in order to continue her hospitality education and transfer to a 4 year institution.

Shana is a member of the American Culinary Federation San Francisco/Chefs Association of the Pacific Coast, and is finishing up her Associate degree at Laney College.

Way to go Shana and David Jones, Chef-Professor, Culinary Arts/Restaurant Management at Laney College, one of the Peralta Colleges.
