Students seeking to complete their GED can get that and more on the Laney College Campus. For each academic term that students are enrolled and attending an Adult School GED class, the student may simultaneously take up to 11 Peralta College units . . . free!
“The opportunity for adult learners to continue their education through adult schools in order to improve English language, develop job training skills, or earn a high school diploma or equivalent – while concurrently enrolling at Laney College, ALL FOR NO COST – should be taken advantage of by our community,” says Shemila R. Johnson, MA, Executive Director of the Northern Alameda Adult Education Collective, which is associated with The Peralta Colleges and this new program. “We are excited to offer this partnership and want everyone to understand that no matter where their journey in school or the workplace is today, it does not have to be the end,” added Johnson.
The PCCD/Oakland Adult and Career Education program offers GED classes taught in both Spanish and English, with evening and morning hours available – depending on student preference and need. Although classes began Monday, August 26, 2019, the free classes are offered year round and students can either attend a class to sign up on the spot, or complete The Peralta Colleges Adult High School Special Admit form and to apply and enroll in a Peralta College at https://www.naaec.org/. The Laney GED courses are held from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Monday through Friday, 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 12:30 – 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays; the classes take place in Room A140. Laney College is located at 900 Fallon Street in Oakland.
Oakland Adult and Career Education is offering GED courses at Laney College to increase access for the community and strengthen the relationship for adult education systems (post high school). Students who may not have considered going to college because of never completing their high school education now have an amazing opportunity to not only complete their high school education AT NO COST, but simultaneously enrich their education experience by taking college courses AT NO COST. This means adult learners, who traditionally do not consider themselves college bound, now have the opportunity to take advantage of completing high school and going to college. “We want to empower our community of adults to go after their education in order to expand their job opportunities, earning potential, and be a model for their friends and family to do the same,” says Erica Gallegos, administrator of this program at the Oakland Unified School District. “The workforce needs individuals with education and training, therefore, the adult schools and community colleges are working to meet the needs that exist to ensure our residents have the chance to earn a livable wage,” she added.
A GED is considered equivalent to a high school diploma and is recognized by all States and internationally. Students earn the GED by passing 4 tests: Math, Reading Language Arts, Science and Social Studies. Students with a GED can qualify for employment, as well as enrollment at a community college.
