12-day Study Abroad RWANDA Summer 2022 & 14-week GHANA Spring 2023

August 4, 2022 - August 16, 2022


Travel dates: Aug. 04- 16th, 2021 (12-days).

RWANDA Zoom info sessions:
Saturdays: 11/20 & 12/4, 2 pm – 12:30 pm
Wednesdays: 12/8, 12/22, 8 pm – 8:30 pm

Cost includes 12-day Rwanda-$3,850 includes RT international flight from SFO or JFK, nice guest-house accommodations, daily breakfast, eco-excursions, Swahili dance & music classes, daily breakfast, air-conditioned tour bus, tour guides, airport transfers in Rwanda, service-learning materials. One Gorilla adventure included! Additional safari adventures at your own expense. 

Cost does not include visa/passports, required trip vaccinations/immunizations, travel insurance, on-your-own expenses.

Steps to Join Study Abroad RWANDA!

Step one: Complete the online RWANDA application interest form:

Step two: Complete the online Peralta’s pre-travel survey:

Step three: Call Andrea Lee, Coordinator for the program and let her know of your interest to join. (510) 833-8950,

Step four:  Attend one of the following online RWANDA info sessions:

Saturdays: 11/20 & 12/4, 2 pm – 12:30 pm
Wednesdays: 12/8, 12/22, 8 pm – 8:30 pm

Step five: Make your first trip deposit to reserve your space in the program. 

Step six: Summer 2022 Course Enrollment Requirement

  • Whether a student or community member, course registration opens in March 2022.  All travelers must be enrolled by May 5, 2022.
  • Laney College courses- Dance 007 (Hybrid) and Dance 1 (100% online)
  • 5-8 transferable units (CSU-Dance 7) (CSU/UC-Dance 1)

High School Students

  • Enroll in the course through concurrent enrollment—parent signature required.

Educators and other college students

  • This program is open to undergraduate/graduate students and staff from other community colleges and four-year institutions! Course enrollment is required.

Required pre-travel documents

In addition to completing the Pre-Travel Study Abroad Information Form, students will need to read, sign and submit the following documents to be accepted to the program:

  1. Apply to the college and obtain a Student ID (if you do not have one already)
  2. Assumption of Risks
  3. Waiver and Release Agreement
  4. Standards of Student Conduct
  5. Submit a completed and signed Add Card (It is okay to leave the course code blank if you do  not know it)
  6. Submit a copy of your passport (Or ID if you do not have one)

Before departure, each student will need to also:

  1. Apply for a Passport (if you do not have one already) or Renew Passport (if not valid for at least 6 months from time of travel)
  2. Make program payments by deadlines
  3. Pay for the course in Student Center
  4. Attend mandatory pre-departure orientations (Dates TBD)
  5. Register with the US Department of Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)
  6. Obtain proper immunizations as listed on the CDC website and check with your physician

~A collaboration of the Office of International Education, Globy Ya Afrika Academy in the Department of Dance at Laney College, and the University of Cape Coast, Ghana-West Africa.

Stay tuned! Progam applications will become available in December 2021.

  • 14 weeks in Ghana, West Africa! The program includes 1 week in Washington DC to explore the National Museum of African American History and Culture and other AA historical sites of interest.

  • Deepen your awareness through experiential service-learning. Choose from a wide variety of interest areas. Previous projects included:
    • Helping a village community lay bricks for their new health center;
    • Organizing a new school library for a girl’s school in Northern Ghana;
    • Joining faculty from the Environmental Education department to conduct refrigeration projects/energy efficiency monitoring in local neighborhoods;
    • Recording beats and writing music with local artists in a music studio;
    • Teaching arts/sports/music/geography to school children;
    • Documenting oral stories through the village archive project;
    • Creating dance choreography with local dancers addressing a social issue of importance.
    • Agriculture and Farming projects
