Spring 2020 Mid-Term College Flex Days: Monday, March 30, 2020

27 March 2020

Hello Peralta,

(web version with updated links here)

I hope you and those closest to you are safe and healthy as we navigate these uncertain times. Our college professional development committees have been doing an amazing job at pulling together remote professional learning opportunities for the first time, so please be sure to thank them for their efforts.

All of our offerings will be mediated through Zoom, and Felipe Wilson had the foresight to begin an etiquette guide that has since been crowd-edited and might be useful for using Zoom with classes:

College Flex Agendas

  • Berkeley City College — Highlights: an introduction to incoming President, Dr. Angélica Garcia, Mindfulness for Stress Reduction with Liliana Moncada, and a happy hour at 6 pm!
  • College of Alameda — COA’s Distance Education and Professional Development committees collaborated to provide two-weeks of on-going professional learning activities rather than a single day of flex. Monday’s highlight: Online Accessibility
  • Laney College — Highlights: Serving students with disabilities, Humanizing online learning, Yoga, and creating TED-Ed videos!
  • Merritt College — Highlights: Creating Trauma-Informed Systems (Part 3), Open Encumbrances, and a discussion on Working Remotely for Classified Professionals.
Lunch Time:
  • The Peralta Federation of Teachers will have a lunch time General Membership Meeting from 12:00 – 1:30 pm. Phone: 1 646 876 9923 (Meeting ID: 533 657 168)

Remote Learning Workshops:

SDO Newsletter, March 11 Emergency Letter

11 March 2020

Hello Peralta!
In order to answer questions about Canvas, Zoom, or other questions , please join me today:

Wednesday, March 11, 2 – 4 pm via Zoom:

Phone: 1 646 876 9923 (Meeting ID: 210 466 2570)

As we enter these challenging and uncertain times, I wanted to acknowledge that:
  • People across the district are working together to figure out solutions! Don’t be afraid to ask for help 🙂!
  • How we communicate with each other is super important, especially when we think about how and what we communicate with students! (W.A.I.T is a helpful mnemonic: Why Am I Talking? or emailing…)

Here are Emergency Remote Teaching Resources from our amazing Distance Education Team:

  • Here’s a webinar for getting online quick (Fri, March 13th, 9 am)
  • I found this article on “Flattening the Curve”  that helped me understand the need for reducing opportunities for the virus to spread rapidly.

While it is NOT mandatory to move onto Canvas (there are other low-tech options), if you’d like support to move online, here are some resources:
  • I need help! I have questions! Please fill out this survey (Faculty Help Survey). We’ll get back to you as soon as we can.
  • I want to help. Please fill out this survey (Faculty Volunteer Support Survey)
  • Each college is coordinating its own set of training and support systems. Please be on the look out for those locally.
Take care and don’t forget to wash your hands!

SDO Office Hours: Study Abroad Programs (Wed,. 2/6/20)

11 February 2020

Andrea Lee and Drew Gephart stopped by the Staff Development Office Online Office Hours to explain how faculty can build a study abroad program.
For students, these types of experiences can be life changing. Many have not had the chance to travel abroad and away from family, so these types of opportunities give them perspectives beyond classroom and online education. In addition, Andrea mentioned the Dance Department at Laney was reinvigorated by creating this capstone experiences to Ghana and Haiti. Other programs include Critical Thinking in Belize, Cosmetology in London, and Business in Japan.
Faculty who develop these programs and recruit enough students to join have the cost of travel subsidized and are paid for the course(s) they teach. In addition, the Office of International Education provides logistical support for the creation and implementation of each class.
Recruiting students and helping them raise funds for their trip requires a great deal of attention and support. While scholarships are given to some students, many must create a plan to raise money through direct donations, savings, and events.

On Housing:

  • Moms 4 Housing — It’s important to understand that they strategically picked the house on Magnolia because it had been purchased by Wedgewood, LLC as an investment that they left vacant while thousands are unsheltered in Oakland.
  • “In College and Homeless.” from The New York Times (2/20/20) with a focus on community college students in California.

Community of Practice: Building a Trauma-Informed Institution

7 February 2020

In Fall 2017, faculty at Berkeley City College were awarded grants for a Focused Inquiry Group (from BCC’s Teaching and Learning Center) and a President’s Innovation Award grant to purchase the film, Resilience: The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope.  Since then, all four campuses have watched the film that launched an initiative to create a trauma-informed institution and BCC has launched an annual Summit: Solidarity in Mental Health.

  • Resilience, the Film — Anyone with a Peralta employee email address can stream this 1-hour film that tells the story of medical research into the implications of toxic stress.
