Teaching Tip:
Pasadena City College is featured in this article, “How to Fix Education’s Racial Inequities, One Tweak at a Time,” which explains that on-going experimentation in the classroom can yield more equitable results for students. But this takes a lot more time than people realize. Even something as simple as shifting the language around late-papers, absences, and missed tests takes years (eight years in this case) of experimentation and strategies to gather broad-scale buy-in. Here’s how they approach classroom innovation:
“Their core philosophy is that unless professors change what they do in the classroom with a deliberate focus on racial equity, even the most well-meaning and dedicated among them will discourage students of color with subtle messages that they don’t belong, that they aren’t expected to succeed, or that they are on their own to sink or swim.”

What I’ve been reading and watching…
- This article by EdSource takes a closer look at the impact of AB705 on students, particularly in the numbers completing transfer level math and English in their first year of community college. “More California Community College Students Entering, Passing Transfer-Level Math and English as a Result of Landmark Law.”
- This new law, AB 943, creates a new pot of emergency funding that be given to students (“New Law Creates Post of Emergency Funds in California”), but it will come out of Student Equity and Achievement Program funds, which may affect funding for those programs.
- Recently released from The International Journal of Critical Pedagogy: Paradoxes and Possibilities of Movement Building from the In-Between. This edition explores the tensions of contradictions of working systems of higher education while trying to work toward social justice.
- This article, “Equity in Grading,” discusses different ways of assessing and evaluating student knowledge and skill other than the traditional high stakes projects, tests, and papers. It’s a good start for people interested in shifting the focus on their grades though I think contract grading takes this idea a bit further.
