Staff Development Office Newsletter: Tuesday, 11/19/19

19 November 2019

Hello Peralta,

After the fall district flex was moved from Laney to COA this fall, it provided an opening to rotate the location. Not only does it bring people to the 4 campuses, but it makes it easier for staff and faculty from those campuses to attend. On Thursday, January 16th, 2020, Merritt has graciously offered to host the day!

Workshops and meeting are still being developed, and if you would like to share research or practices that you think would benefit your colleagues, please propose a workshop by emailing staffdevelopementofficer@peralta.edu.

We’re still looking for people to present on the following topics: grant writing, reports back from equity trainings (Skyline and/or 3CSN), former sabbatical awardee reports, and anything else!

Teaching Tips: Test Stress and Anxiety

We all probably know students who face test anxiety, especially as we head into finals. College often provides all kinds of stress. On the one hand there’s healthy stress that helps me meet deadlines, but in many cases (and what I’ve witnessed with many of my students), such anxiety can be debilitating.
In addition, there’s been research into stereotype threat that may exacerbate already stressful and anxiety provoking situations. Rather than leave it up to the students to grapple with these issues alone, instructors can provide tips for students, like arriving early for tests or other stress-reducing techniques. And instructors can address stereotype threat by promoting growth mindsets and reducing possible triggers in the classroom. Read below for more!

Let me know if you have more resources or will try some of these out!

What I’ve been reading, seeing, and hearing …

  • This webinar on classified professional develop helps clarify from where the funding came and how it’s to be implemented.
  • Sociologists warn not to over-rely on student evaluations, and this report looking at non-economic outcomes for college graduates names three key things they were exposed to: good teaching, academic challenges, and diversity interactions. The caveat for the third finding was that it was not uniform across aggregated groups.
  • This Harvard resource discusses Toxic Stress and what we can do about it.
  • This article from the LA Times documents stories of DACD immigrants.
