Staff Development Office Newsletter: Tuesday, 9/10/19

10 September 2019

Hello Peralta,
This Thursday (9/12/19)  from 12:15 – 1:15 pm, I’ll be discussing two early-term issues that can be quite vexing: Faculty Evaluations and Column Advancement. Please check out the link below to sign-in via Zoom and see all the other professional learning events available!

Coutts argues that tending to language when discussing identity, initiative, mindfulness, praise & feedback, listening, thinking, and community can change class culture and improve student learning. Simple questions, like “What makes you think that?” or using “we” rather than “you” can make a difference!

What I’ve been reading…
  • In this article, “Study Shows Students in ‘Active Learning’ Classrooms Learn More Than They Think”, the researcher explains,  “‘Deep learning is hard work. The effort involved in active learning can be misinterpreted as a sign of poor learning,” he said. “On the other hand, a superstar lecturer can explain things in such a way as to make students feel like they are learning more than they actually are.'”

  • This bit of research on the adolescent brain seems particularly important as we reach into our high schools through dual enrollment and as the definition of “adolescence” expands into the early twenties.
  • Another RSA video on the “The Tyranny of Merit” that might be useful when discussing our equity work. (3 min)
