12 November 2019

Hello Peralta,

This week, as we celebrate our veterans’ service and anticipate the lull between midterms and finals, I’m hoping that you might consider proposing a workshop to share some insight you’ve come across or some collaboration of which you’re proud that you can share during the district professional development day on Thursday, January 16, 2020. These workshops can come from all sectors of the district, from managers, classified, or faculty (or a mix of any group). They can feature student voices, your latest research, or even activities that promote wellness or community building.

In addition, the Staff Development Office Advisory Group will be meeting Wednesday, 11/13/19, 2:15 – 3:30 via zoom. To propose a workshop or to receive an invite to the advisory group, please email staffdevelopmentofficer@peralta.edu. Thanks!

Scott

Teaching Tips: Report on Technology in the Classroom

The ubiquity of mobile technology has changed the classroom and created a number of experiments in policy and practice. This report by Educause surveyed 40,000 students across 118 US institutions, which suggests that students who use online student success platforms, like degree audits and enrollment navigation, find the tools valuable. Another finding shows that 70% of students prefer primarily face-to-face classes, but upon closer inspection the percentage is much lower for students who work for 40 hours or more with outside obligations. As we consider how to use technology, reports like these combined with our own inquiry can help us refine how to use technology in a way that best meets the needs of our students.
