3 December 2019

Hello Peralta,

To kickoff the Spring 2020 term, the District Flex will be on Thursday, 1/16/2020, at Merritt College. Please mark your calendars and RSVP, an agenda will be out soon!

RSVP for S2020 District Flex

Thursday, January 16, 2020, Merritt College

Maybe it’s just me, but the end of the fall term always feels like the push towards finals after Thanksgiving (or “Takesgiving”) can be especially difficult as students study, prepare for transfer, and register for classes.
Students with a history of toxic stress can be affected more deeply. On page 17-19, of Trauma-Informed Practices in Post Secondary Education: A Guide a few recommendations in these final weeks seem useful:
  • Check-in with students: help them name the stress and develop healthy strategies for lowering their anxiety.
  • Help Identify Support Structures: encourage students to seek support from each other, tutors, and even yourself!
  • Maintain High Expectations: “Maintaining consistent expectations, limits, and routines sends the message that the student is worthy of continued unconditional positive regard and attention.”

Flex Day Schedule for Spring 2020:

  • Thursday, January 16, 2020 — District Flex
  • Friday, January 17, 2010 — College Flex
  • Thursday, March 19, 2020 — College Flex

What I’ve been reading, seeing, and hearing …

  • In “Why Are Campuses So Tense?”, Claude Steel compares the current volatility on college campuses to his own experiences.
  • MDRC has a number studies on math pathways, programs designed to “nudge,” and changing developmental education practices.
  • This article on nudging in higher-ed claims that its use hasn’t yielded the promised results, and an article on learning communities forwards the long-standing idea that these intensive experiences best serve “at-risk” students.
  • Others innovators, like Wayfinding, a tiny 2-year college of 15 students (in Portland, of course), is experimenting with a model that leverages students’ interests with some interesting design principles, and the author of Alternative Universities claims that the modern university suffers from a “poverty of imagination.”
  • I first heard the hook for Old Town Road from my 6 year old who heard it on the playground, but this podcast does a nice walk through the history of the song and the debates whether a hip-hop song can be country, too.

(Note: If you hit a firewall for any of these articles, ask your local library if they have a subscription. It’s worth it!).

District Education: Online Student Services

Staff Development Offices Newsletter, Tu, 11/5/19

5 November 2019

Hello Peralta,

This week, Merritt is kicking off Native American Heritage Month on Wed., 11/6, 9:30 am, and PD Committees are debriefing mid-term flex activities (so please fill out the surveys!). Alex Madonik shared photos from COA’s Flex Day, and the Staff Development Advisory Group will be meet on W, 11/13/19, 2:15 – 3:30 pm via Zoom (reply for an invite). I’m currently looking more closely at the Chancellor’s Vision Resource Center, a state-wide platform for online learning for CCC employees, including content from Lynda.com, discussion boards for state initiatives, and a framework for building additional content. Let me know what you think!

Propose a Workshop for Flex (Professional Development) Days: Th, 1/16/20 & F, 1/17/20

Please consider proposing a workshop either for the district or college flex days to share what you’ve learned at a conference or training, insights from an inquiry or community of practice, or to facilitate a conversation around an important issue. Please email staffdevelopmentofficer@peralta.edu.

Here’s an incomplete list of Communities of Practice in Peralta, an excellent Guide for Organizing CoPs, and a CoP Rubric that I’m drafting.

————————————————————————————-

Teaching Tip: Safe Spaces v. Brave Spaces

At a recent Equity Training by 3CSN, the facilitators started with a discussion that compared safe spaces v. brave spaces. They included a policy document from NASPA subtitled, “Historical Context and Recommendations…,” Aware-LA’s “Communication Guidelines for a Brave Space,” and a chapter “From Safe Spaces to Brave Spaces” from Arao and Clemens’ book, The Art of Effective Facilitation. I’m sure there are differences in opinion about whether our discussion spaces, online or in person, in classrooms or via FAS emails, ought to be safe or brave, and these articles might provide a useful context for exploring how we communicate and interact.

Teaching Tips:

On Friday, October 18th, Trish Nelson (English, COA) led the workshop, “Transforming Learning Modules You Like into Models You Love” that included an excellent (and rapid) protocol to reflect on teaching with a partner teacher. This Reading Apprenticeship workshop used an easy template to design a course or unit that would meet learning goals in these areas: content, literacy, metacognition, social/personal, cognitive, knowledge-building, assessment. Here’s the framework, which can be applied to courses across the disciplines.

This Week: Open Educational Resources

In a presentation last spring, Peralta’s OER Community of Practice shared the impact of OER adoption in Fall 2018: 84 sections, 2665 students, $358,676 saved. They projected that with increased adoptions, students would save over $500k. If you’re interested in learning how to research and adopt high-quality materials and resources for your classes, please join us! You’ll also learn how to apply for a stipend to research texts that you might adopt. Presenter: Andrew Park (Physics, COA).

  • AB705 Reports: For those following the state-wide implementation of AB705, which asks CCCs to remove remedial math and English sequences to address equity and improve students’ rate of transfer, this article summarizes findings from these reports, two by PPIC (Report 1 and Report 2) and one from the RP Group
  • While I’m wary of the use of the term “High-Impact”, a few workshops listed in the High-Impact Practices in the States conference guide piqued my interest, including “Improving Retention for First-Year Students,” “Cultivating Student Scholars Through Identity Development,” and “Cafeteria Style Grading.”

Teaching Tip:

Pasadena City College is featured in this article, “How to Fix Education’s Racial Inequities, One Tweak at a Time,” which explains that on-going experimentation in the classroom can yield more equitable results for students. But this takes a lot more time than people realize. Even something as simple as shifting the language around late-papers, absences, and missed tests takes years (eight years in this case) of experimentation and strategies to gather broad-scale buy-in. Here’s how they approach classroom innovation:
“Their core philosophy is that unless professors change what they do in the classroom with a deliberate focus on racial equityeven the most well-meaning and dedicated among them will discourage students of color with subtle messages that they don’t belong, that they aren’t expected to succeed, or that they are on their own to sink or swim.”

Staff Development Office Hours — Fall 2019

3 October 2019

This fall, the Staff Development Office will host weekly office hours on various topics with guest speakers from around the district.

During Fall 2018 and Spring 2019, we experimented with a number of different topics with varying levels of attendance, and we’d like to continue this format to encourage more people in the district to share their experiences working on a variety of issues, including diversity in hiring, guided pathways, pedagogy, and a number of other issues!

If you’d like to propose a topic, please contact staffdevelopmentofficer@peralta.edu with your suggestions and to set up a time!
