Community of Practice: Building a Trauma-Informed Institution

In Fall 2017, faculty at Berkeley City College were awarded grants for a Focused Inquiry Group (from BCC’s Teaching and Learning Center) and a President’s Innovation Award grant to purchase the film, Resilience: The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope.  Since then, all four campuses have watched the film that launched an initiative to create a trauma-informed institution and BCC has launched an annual Summit: Solidarity in Mental Health.

Solidarity in Mental Health Summit: Incarceration and Our Communities — October 16, 2019

On Wednesday, October 19, 2019, the Berkeley City College Wellness Center sponsored the 2nd annual Solidarity in Mental Health Summit that focused on incarceration and mental health. Panelists included Eddy Zheng, co-founder of Asian Prison Support Committee, Tyger Blair, Program Manager for Rafiki Coalition and volunteer in San Quentin Prison, Linda Lane, Juvenile Probation Officer, Robert Paige, Oakland actor and playwright, Lindsay Krumbein, founder of Gritty City Repertory, Casper Cendre, co-founder of ABO Comix, Raymond Banks, Liliana Campos, M.S., doctoral student, and more!

#PracticeSolidarity Join us for a daylong interactive community event committed to creating change. We are inviting all (educators, students, interns, policymakers, activists) who are interested in how mental health andsocial justice connect in different spaces. We will hear voices from QPOC – Queer People of Color, the UCRC – Undocumented Resource Center/DACA students, the Ryse Center, our Umoja Learning Community, and varioushealth and wellness providers.  We are calling our community to join us in Waking Up, Standing Up and Lifting Up the needs of our most marginalized. We need your voice!! Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. During lunch enjoy our self-care space, with massage, meditation and aromatherapy. The second half of the day will contain an interactive activity, debrief and actionable intentions.

Watch Resilience, the Film

Berkeley City College purchased an institutional copy of Resilience: The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope as a part of an initiative to build trauma-informed institutions. As of September 2018, we’ve screened the film at 3 different colleges and will continue the discussion by building a community of practice around mental health and resilience.
