Undocumented Student Action Week Announcement

“Dear Faculty, Staff, and Administrators,
This week, October 14-18, is Undocumented Student Action Week.  The Peralta Community College District along with California Community Colleges and the Community College League of California have come together to raise awareness and support for our undocumented students. The California Community Colleges has the highest number of undocumented students of any of our public statewide higher learning institutions. At Peralta, we are committed to supporting this community, which has been under attack by our current federal administration. Today’s Peralta blog post includes the full text of Board of Trustees Resolution #19/20-11 in support of our undocumented community.
The end of the blog post includes links to a some of the events that are happening at our colleges from the Undocumented Community Resource Center (UCRC) at Berkeley City College as well as College of Alameda and Laney College.  I’d also like to make you aware of daily webinars for Faculty and for Students which are available online.  Click the title to register.

Educator Focused Webinars (Held each day from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.)

  • Protecting Student Data: Legal Responsibilities & Connecting Students To Resources // Tuesday, October 15: Learn from LACCD’s district-wide model about how they safely identify and effectively outreach to all undocumented students while protecting student data. Get tips & tools to implement this on your campus!
  • Pursuing Sustainable Funding for Undocumented Student Programming // Wednesday, October 16: Learn from the strategies two community colleges have used to obtain Equity and AB 19 funds to support new and expanding programming for undocumented students on their campus.
  • Creating Safe Spaces on Campus: UndocuTalks Toolkit // Thursday, October 17: Increase the concentric circles of safety and care available for undocumented students on your campus through personal reflection, UndocuTalks, professional development and the new Mental Health Connector, created by Immigrants Rising.
  • Increasing Support for Undocumented Students at the CCCs Training Module // Friday, October 18: Get a sneak peek at the brand new systemwide training module created by the CCC Dreamers Project to increase support for undocumented students at California Community Colleges. Find out about this easy to access online tool, which is available anytime, to be able to effectively enlist other educators, administrators, and staff on your campus to complete the training.

Student Focused Webinars (Held each day from 2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.)

  • Accessing Reputable Legal Support // Tuesday, October 15: Learn about the information and tools you can use to explore your immigration options. Get resources on ways you can protect yourself and your family from deportation.
  • The UndocuHustle: Generating Income, Regardless of Immigration Status // Wednesday, October 16: Explore how to develop an entrepreneurial mindset and generate income by starting your own business or working a side hustle! Hear testimonies of undocumented youth who have successfully built their careers with or without work authorization.
  • Thriving with Fear & Building Resilience // Thursday, October 17: A panel of undocumented youth leaders share strategies for harnessing fear through art, therapy and resistance.
  • Healing Through Art: The Emotional Expression of Art in Social Justice // Friday, October 18: Learn how the undocumented youth movement historically used art and politics together to create activism: an outlet for the expression of the challenges of being undocumented in America. You will also be able to participate in art making!
